"What do you name a restaurant that, serves the tastiest of Ameri- can and Italian and Lebanese foods and even the most delicious Jewish-style mushroom-barley soup you ever blew on to cool it off? That's the tickler being puz- zled by two of the best re- staurateurs 'round town. "Sam Agemy is a former waiter, cook and maitre d' of the Sheik Restaurant on Monroe and former man- ager of the London Chop House. Sam Jarrus is the former original owner of the Chambertin on Michigan Ave. and former part-owner of the one-time Atrium on Telegraph. Talking to the two Sams, one gets the feel- ing that whatever were and are the best qualities of these eateries were due to these mavens of the mun- chies. "Sam and Sam's new eight-week-old venture is Shakespeare's Inn on Tele- graph at Plymouth Rd. Shakespeare's score card has always been high: quiet, comfortable dining, good American-English food, with a nod to several Italian dishes by virtue of Shakes- peare's Portia, Romeo, Juliet and other sunny clime characters. A bounti- ful bar and wine cellar, fresh, crisp salad bar, pleas- ant, well-trained help and soft, flattering lighting in a not-too-kitchy Tudor decor all added to the good eating experience. "Now, with Sam and Sam on the scene, it can only get better! And, with their Middle East back- n tur- grounds, the adve ous palate can also enjoy some of the finest-tasting Lebanese food ever of- fered to the Detroit area public, in addition to the regular tasty fare. (Even Hit is not on the menu, the Lebanese delicacies will always be available.) "Since Shakespeare never set a play in Lebanon, that is as good a reason as any to change the restau- rant's name. "The two Sams' favorite name at the _moment is House of Lords. The Ras- kins, husband Sid and I played the name game and came up with Continental Sams, Two Sams, Double Sammy and Sam and Sam. But, as Shakespeare said, 'A rose by any other name: . and in two or three weeks a new sign should declare the decision. "The evening the four of us greeted the Sams, they prepared a Middle East feast that included pickled eggplant, light green and spicy olives, houmous (a mashed chick peas dish), taboulee salad (made with chopped fresh parsley, to- matoes and cracked wheat), the best lamb and rice- stuffed grape leaves, tightly wrapped and delicately fla- vored and the most tender shish kabob that I have had c r, TRY OUR DINNER. SPECIALS Everything 7 DAYS A WEEK 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. the pleasure of eating. Plus —.and I can't be- lieve we ate the following but we did and loved it — kibbee — that's raw ground lamb, folks, blended with cracked wheat, olive oil and deli- cate spices — topped with sauteed ground lamb, on- ions and pine nuts. The topping is called Hashwee. The wine we enjoyed was Establisse- ments Cruse's Pinot Chardonnay, a white burgundy, and our excel- lent waitress' name was Bernadine "Bernie" Boumann. "Another time, we will try different fare. Another attraction is singer-pianist Kathy Landis, who entertains with the best of pop and jazz each Wednes- day through Saturday. Kathy has played at the London Chop House and the Caucus Club. "Dinner prices are mod- erate." SHAKESPEARE'S INN seats about 190 . . . Plus being served by very efficient Bernie, we also enjoyed the graciousness of • evening hostess Victoria Fitzsimmons . . . and the additional fine service of Dion Zupon. As Marilyn wrote, the dishes were all delicious Lebanese fare . . . and naturally, with pita bread. Previously, the four of us had ordered calves liver, frog legs, crab legs and Lon- don broil . . . Fresh hot rolls and fresh creamery butter were on the table.
