terror and sabotage of the

is not easy to convince
people with the argument,
that the British abolished
the mandate because the
IZL bombed the King David
Hotel in Jerusalem, which
was the seat of the mandat-
ory authorities or because
the IZL had executed three
British sergeants in
Natanya. Even the well or-
ganized force of the Hagana
could not face the British
Army in Palestine.
The U.K. abolished the
mandate for political
reasons, as the Second
World War had created
two blocks, which have
decided to divde the
world between the U.S.
and the Soviet Union. The
U.K. was no partner in
this development and de-
cision. Prof. Yeshayahu
Leibovitch seems to be
right, when he main-
tained in his lecture, that
President Truman and
Foreign Minister
Gromyko established the
state of Israel.
It was a cynical comment,
but there was some truth in
it. He claimed that the
Holocaust in Europe had no
influence on this develop-
ment. This is not fair to the

Condemned in
Church Ruling
FORT WAYNE, Ind.
(JTA) — Meeting at the
16th annual conference of
the -Bulgarian Diocese in
the United States and
Canada, the Rt. Rev. Bishop
Kyrill, Prelate of the Bulga-
rian Diocese of the Or,
thodox Church in America,
issued an encyclical con-
demning anti-Semitism as
"contrary to our Christian
philosophy and as such vio-
lates the will of God."
The encyclical further de-
clared that the "Holocaust
. . . should not be forgotten,
but rather should be taught
in Christian and Jewish set-
tings as a never-ending re-
minder of what man has
done against man and God."
The encyclical war pre-
sented to representatives of
the Fort Wayne Jewish
Jews, who were killed by
the Nazis. The thesis of
Prof. Leibovitch is not only
an offense to the historic
truth but also to the Jews.
Prof. Leibovitch was sup-
ported by Prof. David Vital
of the Univeristy of Warsaw
who claimed that there is no
connection between the
Holocaust and the state of
Israel. Gen. Rommel nearly
reached in World War II the
gates of Palestine and if he
would have _continued his
advance from El Alamein,
he would have destrcyed
Palestine.
Prof. Josef Nedawa of the
University of Haifa voiced
the opinion, that the
Holocaust has instigated
the undergrOund move-
ments to fight the British
mandatory authorities in
order to pave the way for a
Jewish state as a home for
all refugees of the
Holocaust.
Prof. Ettinger of the
Hebrew University said,
that up till now no exact
research has been car-
ried out about this ques-
tion, but there is no
doubt, that the Holocaust
refugees were–a very im-
portant factor for the es-
tablishment the state of
Israel.
The former President • of
the World Jeviish Congress
Dr. Nahum Goldmann told
the conference, it would be
'better to concentrate on ur-
gent problems of the state
like the occupied territories
and the expansion of fron-
tiers. There is no prospect
for another Holocaust. The
U.S. and the Soviet Union
would not tolerate the de-
struction of the Jewish
state.

people. The Jewish genera--
tion of the 30s and 40s bears
a heavy burden, as it did not
concern itself seriously with
the danger of Nazism and
did not provide in time
for saving the Jews- of
Europe. It is not certain that
the Holocaust could have
been avoided, but if the
Jews would have exerted
pressure in time on the free
world, hundreds of
thousands of Jews could
have been saved.
Prof. Bela Vaga main-
tained, that tie
Holocaust did not put
end to anti-Semitism
the world. After it no new
good relations were
created between Jews
and gentiles.
There was a question
asked, whether such a dis-
cussion was necessary in
1979. One thing is sure: the
state of Israel was created
by arms and ploughshares.
The most important prob-
lem for the state of Israel
today seems to be: How to
establish a united internal
front in order to strengthen
and develop the state:
