Briefing sessions for
community leaders and
lawyers monitoring the up-
coming trial of Valerian
Trifa will be held at 3:30
and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in
the LaMed Auditorium of
the United Hebrew Schools.
Trifa is the suspected
Romanian Iron Guard
leader accused of inciting
and participating in the
butchery of Romanian Jews
during World War II.

ler has been involved for
a number of years in the
quest to bring Trifa to
justice. He has met with
officials of the Justice
Department, federal pro-
secutors and Romanian
officials.

At the present time, the
Trifa trial is scheduled to
begin July 30 before Fed-
eral Judge Cornelia Ken-
nedy in Detroit.

Sponsored by the Jewish
Community Council of Met-
ropolitan Detroit, the
Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith, the American
Jewish Committee and the
American Jewish Congress,
the briefing sessions will
provide background infor-
mation on Trifa, the Justice
Department's handling of
similar. cases involving al-
leged Nazi war criminals

and appropriate Jewish
community response to this
issue.
The speaker and re-
source person for the
briefing will be David
Geller, director of Euro-
pean and Latin American
affairs for the American
Jewish Committee. Gel-

Federal prosecutors re-
cently received several car-
tons of documents from the
Romanian government on
the Trifa case. At the same
time, Trifa's attorneys have
asked Judge Kennedy to
dismiss the case. Both is-
sues could delay the start of
the trial.

help put on trial the alleged
Nazi criminal, Gustav

protected by Brazilian law
from extradition.
The ambassador, who as-
sumed his duties two weeks
ago, was urged by three
Americans that Brazil could
declare Wagner persona
non grata and he would
then have to leave Brazil for
a country that possibly
would not have the extradi-
tion restriction Brazil has.
The Brazilian Supreme
Court has ruled that under
its 25-year limitation sta-
tute, Brazil cannot extra-
dite Wagner to Austria for
trial there. In their meeting
with the ambassador, Rep.
Robert Dornan (R-Calif.)
and Rabbis Marvin her
and Abraham Cooper of the
Simon Wiesenthal Center
for Holocaust Studies at
Yeshiva University of Los
Angeles, observed the
court's decision was on judi-
cial and not on moral terms.
The ambassador, Hier
said later, was "very
sympathetic" to the re-
quest from Dornan and
the rabbis to provide
them with a copy of the
court decision denying
extradition and convey-
ing the suggestion for the
persona non grata action
to his government. The
ambassador said that
Brazilian public opinion
is very much opposed to
Wagner and considers
his stay in Brazil "a stain
on the flag of Brazil in the
community of nations."
