and afterwards: a reluctant
acknowledgement of the di-
dactic value for the unin-
formed combined with
harsh criticism of the con-
trived "Hollywood style"
plot used to tell the story;
the superficiality of historic
treatment; and an under-
playing or "rose-colored"
portrayal of the true horrors
of reality, which all agreed,
far surpassed the pos-
sibilities of fictional imagi-
nation.
The viewing audience,
though exceptionally large,
did not reach the high per-
centage that saw the pro-
gram in West Germany.
Critics gave two reasons.
First, many Italians lived
through these experiences
first hand as victims, and
vicarious identification was
too painful. The second rea-
son was well stated by the
Rome daily II Messaggero:
"Italian anti-Semitism
was confined to only a fana-
tic minority. The masses do
not feel indirect guilt nor
involvement in the horrors
of Nazi (crimes). 'Holocaust'
did not touch them as
elsewhere."

Allon to Seek
Party Leadership

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Yigal Allon, who served a
Froeign Minister in the last
two Labor governments and
derives his political support
from the Labor-oriented
kibbuta movement, has
indicated that he may chal-
lenge Shimon Peres for
leadership of the Labor
Party well before the next
elections.
"Those who reject compe-
tition over the office give
the Labor Party the image
of a rabbit party," Allon said
in an apparent jab at Peres.
He rejected allegations that
he was using last week's
merger between the former
Mapai and former Achdut
Avodah kibutz movements
to advance his own political
career.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
joint Israeli-Egyptian Mili-

Arish to continue dis-
cussions from western

The first phase was com-

turned to Egyptian sover-

The Egyptians reportedly
have asked for details into
the condition of the local
population, mainly Bedouin
tribes.

Bible Acronym Collection
Found in Marwick Volume

By ALLEN A. WARSEN
Dr. Lawrence Marwick,
author of the "Dictionary of
Hebrew Diplomatic Terms"
and head of the Hebrew sec-
tion of the Library of Con-
gress, compiled the volume
titled "Biblical and Judaic
Acronyms" (Ktav).
The volume consists of
thousands of acronyms, ab-
breviations and initialisms.
They begin with the ac-
ronym A that stands for
Codex Alexandrinus, and
end with the acronym
ZZW-Zydowski Zwiazek
Wojskowy.
In addition, the volume
includes an appendix com-
mencing with the acronym
ACM signifying Arab
Common Market and end-
ing with ZZ denoting Zak-
land Zapotrzewania (Sup-
ply Institution), Warsaw
Ghetto.
Coincidentally, the ac-
ronyms ZZW and ZZ refer to
Jewish-Polish institutions.
In his introduction the
author notes, "The tendency
to use acronyms has per-
vaded all aspects of modern
Jewish activities — social,
economic, communal, reli-
gious, literary and educa-
tional." He observes that
the adjective "Judaic" in the
book's title defines "the
scope of the volume," while
"biblical" includes exegesis,
archeology, numismatics,
paleography, linguistics
and others, "attesting to the
universal interest in the Bi-
ble."
Incidentally, the dictio-
nary defines acronym as a
"word formed from the first
(or first few) letters of sev-
eral words."
This, compilation is espe-
cially useful in deciphering
an acronym, such as R that
may represent various
names, for instance, Rab,
Rabba, Rabbah, Rabban,
Rabbenu, Rabbi, Rabbinic,
Ray, Reform, Rimus, Epis-
tle to the Romans. Even the
popular acronym BB, in
addition to Bnai Brith, de-
notes Baba Bathra or Baba
Batra, Bezzenbergers Beit-
rage, Biblische Beitrage,
Babylonische Briefs aus der
