F. Stone, to the temple's lecture platform. The Birmingham 'Tem- ple, in a communication over the signatures of Rabbi Wine and President Lynne Silverberg, replied to the statement of the JCC Rab- binical Commission president, Rabbi Israel Halpern, which appeared in The Jewish News issue of June 22. The reply to Rabbi Halpern, demanding an apology, is dated June 27. A copy of it was sent to The Jewish News by Rabbi Wine on June 29. The Wine- Silverberg reply to Rabbi Halpern in behalf of Bir- mingham Temple follows: "We have read your letter of censure and we are indig- nant. Mann, chairman, reported on the President's delegation which visited Israel earlier this month. While no agreement was reached on Alon Moreh, the controversial Gush Emunim settlement near Nablus on the West Bank, the President's Conference members did reach agree- ment that: Jewish settlements in Begin Adviser Judaea, Samaria and Gaza are legal; there must be no second Pales- tinian Arab state — Jor- dan is already a Palesti- nian Arab state; Jerusalem is indivisible and must remain so under Israeli sovereignty as the eternal capital of the Jewish state; the United States should have no relations with the Palestine Liberation Organization. The President's Conference holds the conviction that Israel will carry out its commitments under the Camp David accords both in their letter and in their spirit. Plans for a campaign to educate the Jewish and Explains Policies on U.S. Tour Rabbi Claims NEW YORK (JTA) — Harry Hurwitz, Premier Gradual Erosion Menahem Begin's adviser of Rabbinate on external information has begun a tour across the United States in which he will meet with representa- tives of the American media in an effort to explain the policies of the Begin gov- ernment, some of which have aroused sharp criti- cism in the general media and puzzlement and con- troversy among American Jews. Speaking with members of the Jewish media in New York at a press conference at the Israeli Consulate here, Hurwitz said that the main message he carries with him is that "the terms of the peace agreement be- tween Israel and Egypt are working satisfactorily," and that the process of normali- zation between the two countries is moving quicker than anticipated. FALLSBURG, N.Y., Rabbi Abraham B. (JTA) Hecht, president of the Rabbinical Alliance of America, told the annual convention of the Orthodox rabbinical group here last week that there has been "a gradual and ultimately de- vastating erosion in the im- portance of the Orthodox rabbinate." Rabbi Hecht, who was re- cently elected to a third term, said there had been an erosion process underway in the American Jewish com- munity and attributed it to the "almost total emphasis" on Israel during the past de- cade. He said "American synagogues have been so busy concerning themselves with Israel that they have neglected the needs of the local Jewish community." general communities on the Jerusalem issue were dis- cussed in some detail and a kit of materials, compiled by the President's Confer- ence, was distributed to the 32 affiliated national Jewish religious and secu- lar organizations that make up the Conference. What can choose to muzzle opponents of the government. They do not confuse honest dis- agreement with treason. "We believe that you owe an apology to I.F. Stone and to the Birmingham Temple for your intermperate ac- , < tion. Forbidding dissent is a dangerous precedent, which does you little honor. "The Birmingham Tem- ple will continue to serve the Jewish community by-' providing a forum for mans loyal Jewish voices that would not otherwise be heard." As of Monday afternoon Rabbi Halpern said he had not yet received the letter. Read to him by The Jewish News, he said the Rabbini- cal commission will no doubt stand by its original rebuke to anyone giving a platform to enemies of Is- rael. Prior to the receipt of the letter from Rabbi Wine ac- companying a copy of his temple's letter to Rabbi Halpern, The Jewish News also received, by registered mail, a letter from Mrs. Ann Kutnick expressing re- sentment over the manner in which The Jewish News treated the I.F. Stone issue news-wise and editorially. GOT A PROBLEM? DAVE'S PLUMBING A flush beats a full house 967-3343 no sabbath calls 855-1400 FENBY STEIN TALENT AGENCY - DO FOR YOU?
