CAIRO (ZINS) — The
land of Egypt covers an area
of 997,667 square kilomet-
ers, of which only 35,580 are
inhabited and cultivated.
The climate is a very dry
one.
There are some 40.5 mil-
lion inhabitants of whom 40
percent are less than 15
years old. The population
increases yearly at a rate of
2.3 percent; the language of
the country is Arabic; most
of the educated Egyptians
also are conversant in
French or English.
The religion of most of the
inhabitants is Sunni Mos-
lem. Only eight percent of
the population are Chris-
tian Copts. There is one
physician for every 1,700
residents and one hospital
bed for every 500 inhabi-
tants.
Seventy percent of the
population are still illit-
erate. There are 4.25 mil-
lion youngsters enrolled
in elementary schools
and 410,000 students in
the universities. Thirty-
five thousand are
enrolled in teachers
seminaries.
Forty-five percent of the
work force are engaged in
agriculture; 18 percent in
industry. Egypt's oil wells
produce 412,800 barrels a
day.
In 1978, the standing
army,numbered 345,000 —
the military budget
amounted to $4.37 billion.
After signing the peace
treaty with Israel, the
Egyptians changed their
national anthem, which
was dedicated to war, and
adopted a new one which is
'dedicated to peace.
