According to Gisela Weisz: The trials and tribula- tions Jews underwent from persecution and discrimina- tion were adduced as rea- sons why Jews excell intel- lectually by two of the best-known names in American journalism. Dr. Joyce Brothers and Ann Landers were on a pro- gram entitled, "Successful Living Rally," and in an interview voiced their views about their Jewishness. Neither, however, said that her Jewishness had anything to do with her success, yet in answer to a specific question, both gave credit to the theory of the survival of the fit- test as having been a fac- tor in the rise of Jewish people to prominence. "I think of myself as a human being," said Miss Landers. "I don't think that my ethnic background has had anything to do with anything that has happened to me except that it has given me, as a human being, a great deal of strength." She then added, "My 5,000-year-old roots have made me stronger. After all, we are all made up of the material that has been given to us through the cen- turies. So I believe that I have been blessed because it has given me a special strength." Yes she continued, "But I don't feel that in my profes- sional life this has made any kind of difference." When we asked Dr. Brothers whether she found her Jewishness a boon or a hindrance to her career, she replied: "I did not find it more dif- ficult to succeed in the sense that I had a Jewish father who instilled in me a desire to succeed." Asked about the prepon- derance of Jewish intellec- tuals, she responded: "The people who survived had to deal with all the Israel Charges Peace Process Subversion' UNITED NATIONS, N.Y., (JTA) — Israel charged at the Security Council last week that a de- bate on Palestinian rights is taking place because the enemies of peace in the Middle East "attempt to subvert the ongoing peace process in the Middle East, which has now entered its second phase." The Security Council was called into session Friday to discuss a report by the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People. The committee is composed of 23 countries, 19 of which do not have diplomatic relations with Israel. pressures over the years. A selection of bright people remained. If you were not bright, you were killed in the pogroms." Ann Landers gave more details: "In many countries Jews were not allowed to own property. They were not allowed to go to uni- versities, so the challenge was to educate yourself. They always had a very high regard for educa- tion and because in the role of commerce and fi- nance many doors were closed to them, they had to work twice as hard to open up those doors. They always had to be — maybe — better than somebody else. I've al- ways made a very strong point of the fact that I am Jewish. "I think it is interesting that approximately one- third of the Nobel Prize winners are Jewish and a great majority of the Pulitzer Prize winners are Jewish. I think that that makes a statement. I think it means something. But I myself have never felt any anti-Semitism, although some people have, I'm sure. I have never felt discrimi- nated against because I'm Jewish, or because I'm a woman, or because I'm any- thing. I've always felt that I have been very fortunate; people were very good to me."
