Traditional Hasidic WeddinE
Sees Marriage of a Shemtov
A traditional Jewish
wedding in the Hasidic style
united Mariasha Shemtov
and Rabbi Yosef Y. Groner
Monday at Cong. Dovid Ben
Nuchim.
The bride is the daughter
of Rabbi Berel Shemtov, a
leader in Detroit Chabad
Lubavitch ranks, and Mrs.
Shemtov. Parents of the
bridegrooth are Rabbi Lei-
ble Groner, senior member
of the secretariat of Rabbi
Menachem M. Schneerson,
the Lubavitcher Rebbe, and
Mrs. Groner.
Guests at the wedding
celebration were from every
walk of life and from every
continent. Some were mem-
bers of the renowned
Hasidic-rabbinic families of
the Shemtovs and the Grop-
ers; some were men of sci-
ence and letters; others
were long-standing friends
of Rabbi Shemtov and sup-
porters of Michigan
Lubavitch since its early
years here; and finally,
there were the young men
and women, colleagues and
fellow-students of the bride
and bridegroom at the Cen-
tral Lubavitch Rabbinic
Academy and the Bais
Rivka Women's Seminary,
both in New York.
Among the guests
were: Rabbis Moshe
Groner, the bridegroom's
uncle, of the Central
Lubavitch Secretariat;
Zemach Gurevitch, the
bridegroom's grand-
father, of the Booklyn
Rabbinate; Menachem
Rodal, a rosh yeshiva at
the Lubavitch Yeshiva of
Pittsburgh; Mendel
Popack, head of
Lubavitch activities in
Capetown, South Africa;
Shlomo Aron Kazar-
nowsky, emissary of the
Lubavitcher Rebbe for 30
years; Menachem Zev
Greenglass, a noted
Kabalist, who serves as
rosh yeshiva and in-
structor of Hasidic phi-
losophy at the Rabbinical
College of Canada in
Montreal.
Also Joshua Korf,
grandfather of the bride, a
leader of Brooklyn's Hasidic
community; Pinchas Korf,
an uncle of the bride and
rosh yeshiva at the Oholei
Torah Institute of New
York; Avraham Shemtov,
head of the Lubavitch office
in Philadelphia and
liaison-officer for Chabad-
Lubavitch to the White
House, the U.S. Senate and
the U.S. House of Represen-
tatives; Mendel Shemtov, a
noted businessman and
rabbi, head of Republic
Plastics Corp. and
Lubavitch contact to the
Jewish communities of Ja-
pan, Hong Kong a-nd
Taiwan; Yosef Sudak,
whose father, Rabbi
_Nachman Sudak, directs
Lubavitch operations in
London and the United
Kingdom.
The wedding began with
the "Kabalat Panim" or re-
ception for chassen and
kalla. The Tena'im or bet-
rothal agreement was
signed, at which the
mothers of the bride and
bridegroom together
smashed a plate on the
symbolizing the
remembrance of the de-
struction of the Jerusalem
sanctuary. The ketuba
(marriage contract) was
then signed and the brideg-
room recited a special dis-
sertation of Hasidic philog.-
ophy (called a Ma'amar) ex-
plaining the mystic signifi-
cance of bride, bridegroom
and matrimony.
'
Holding lit candl
bis Groner and Sherntov
then conducted the chasser'
to his bride to perform thee,
badecken or veiling, re:-
miniscent of Rebbeca's
covering her face with her
veil upon seeing Isaac_ b
fore their betroth
(Genesis 26:65). The wed-
ding ceremony under t
canopy of "Chupa" was held
in the brilliant sunshii
outside, "under the canopy
of heavens" in accordan
with ancient Jewish tradi-
tion.
The bride was con-
ducted to the hupa by her
mother and the bride
room's, holding burnis
candles, to the strains of
an Hasidic melod
Under the canopy, the
bride and her entourage
encircled the groo
seven times — for on the
day of his wedding, the
chassen is compared to a
king, and just as
monarch is encircled by
his legions, so is th.L.
groom to be encircled by
his kalla.
Master of ceremonies was
Rabbi Yitschak M. Kagan,
assistant administrator o
Michigan Lubavitch. Rabin.
Shlomo Aron Kazarnowsky
read a letter of greetii
from the Lubavitcher Re-
bbe.
When the ceremony w
over, hundreds of young
guests began singing a
dancing. The dancing was
in accordance with Tora
Law separate circles f
men and women on eith
side of a Mehitza — a phrsi-
cal barrier, with no social
mixed dancing. Followin
tradition, the bride ati
bridegroom were hoiste
onto chairs and lifted abov
the dancing guests.
