Israel Destroys- 5 Syrian MiGs in Lebanese Air Battle Wednesday

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Is-
rael air force jets shot down
five Syrian MiG-21 inter-
ceptors in an air battle over
south Lebanon Wednesday
morning. A military com-
munique said the Syrian
planes were engaged in the
Sidon area when they tried
to intervene against an Is-
raeli air strike on terrorist
targets. The Israeli aircraft
completed their mission and

returned safely to their
bases, the communique
said.
Damascus Radio, silent
for three hours after the
dogfight, admitted later
that four Syrian planes had
been hit and claimed two Is-
raeli planes were hit. The
radio station of the Popular
Front for the Liberation of
Palestine in Beirut claimed
that two Israeli planes were
shot down by terrorists fir-
ing shoulder rockets and
that the pilot of one was
seen parachuting to the
ground. An Israeli military
spokesman categorically
denied all reports that any
Israeli aircraft was hit.

The Israeli air force was
engaged in what has be-
come almost a routine of
daily air strikes at terrorist
targets in Lebanon
A State Department
spokesman said the U.S.
"was seriously con-
cerned" about Israel's
use of U.S.-supplied F-15
jets over Lebanon. In
Cairo, an Egyptian
spokesman said Israeli
attacks on Palestinian
targets posed a danger to
the ideast peace process.

Israeli and Syrian planes
have not been engaged in
combat since the separation
of forces agreement on the
Golan Heights was signed
five years ago, ending the
Yom Kippur War.
The latest series of at-
tacks began Sunday after a
bomb exploded in a pickup
truck outside the Tel Aviv
central bus station. Two Is-
raeli Arabs in the truck
were killed and three bys-
tanders injured.
The dead are Issa Ismail
Yousouf, 43, a dealer in
Arabic books in Kfar Kas-
sem village who owned the
Ford pick-up truck and
George Theodori, 24, an
employee of the East
Jerusalem Electric Corp.,

Yousouf was described as

a wealthy man of a respect-

able family. His relatives
said that the bomb — 5 kgs.
of high explosives — was
placed in his truck without
his knowledge. But security
sources believe Yousouf was
employed by terrorists to
transport the bomb because
his vehicle carried Israeli
license plates that would
not arouse suspicion in Tel

Aviv.
They are also investigat-
ing whether Theodori, an
electrical engineer, might
not have been engaged in
preparing bombs and tim-
ing devices.
Premier Menahem Begin,
on a two-day tour of the
Galilee, told residents of the
border town of Kiryat
Shmona Tuesday night that
the Israel army has taken
the initiative against Pales-
tinian terrorists and has
them on the run. He spent
the night at Kiryat Shmona
which is largely populated
by immigrants from Orien-
tal countries and has long
been a target of terrorist
rocket and artillery attacks.

"The initiative in south
Lebanon is in our hands
now," Begin told an audi-
ence of 10,000 at the Kiryat
Shmona Amphitheater
where he received a rousing

Israel Claims UNIFIL Protects
and Aids Terrorists in Lebanon

TEL AVIV (JTA) —
Senior Israeli military offi-
cers have changed that offi-
cers and soldiers of the
United Nations Interim
Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL)
were cooperating fully with
Palestinian terrorists in
south Lebanon, allowing
them, among other things,
to retain bases in UNIFIL
controlled territory.
Aside from the two ar-
rests of UNIFIL officers for
smuggling arms for the
Palestinians, Israel says
UNIFIL officers have been
caught filming military
positions in the Christian
enclaves in south Lebanon.

welcome. "We have the
strength to hit the terrorists
until they stop the
bloodshed. And now they
are fleeing. We do not re-
taliate any more. We hit
them once or even twice a
day according to our deci-
sion and any time. We look
for them in their hiding
places. We try to locate their
command posts, those re-
sponsible for murder. You
have a good chance to get rid
of the terrorists but give us
time to fulfill this chance. It
is our intention to dissuade
them from wanting to hurt
us. But this is not done
overnight," he said.
Begin met with Maj. Saad
Haddad, commander . of the
Christian militia in south
Lebanon and reiterated Is-
rael's pledge not to desert
the Christians who are
battling the Palestinians.
He also repeated his call to
the Lebanese government

UNITED NATIONS
(JTA) — Israel protested
Monday in a letter to Secre-
tary General Kurt Wal-
dheim and the UN
Secretariat, the listing of
the "terrorist" Palestine
Liberation Organization
(PLO) as "government" in
an official UN publication.
The publication was is-
sued by the Special Unit on
Palestinian Rights at the
UN Secretariat.
The Israeli letter stated
in part: "This is further evi-
dence of the fact that the in-
tegrity of the UN
Secretariat has been
gravely compromised, and
that the unit is a pliant tool
in the hands of the terrorist
PLO."

But most serious, they con-

terrorists have established

in south Lebanon sur-
rounded by 500-meter strips
that are out of bounds to

UNIFIL troops.
According to the
