Refugees' Legitimate Rights

Editor, The Jewish News:
Jewish refugees from
Arab countries, some
850,000, were forced to
leave their countries. They
and their children now
number two million. What
of their "legitimate rights?"
What of these Jews' "just
requirements?" What of the
Jews' restitution and reset-
tlement, compelled to leave,
expelled en masse, com-
pletely destitute?
Unlike the Jews in Arab
countries, Palestinian
Arabs were never expelled
or forced to leave Israel. The
number of Jews expelled
from Arab countries far ex-
ceeds the number of Pales-
tinian Arabs who left Israel,
and the wealth abandoned
by Jews in Arab countries
surpasses maw times the
property left behind by
Arabs in Israel.
Jewish refugees from
Arab countries received no
financial support from the
international community.
Their absorption was fi-
nanced completely by the
Israeli government and
their Jewish brethern in Is-
rael and abroad: Arab refu-
gees have been the sole re-
sponsibility of the United
Nations, which has spent
approximately $1.4 billion
to date on their mainte-
nance. Some 70 percent of
that figure came from the
U.S. Treasury.
More than 40 percent of
Israel's Jewish popula-
tion are refugees from
Arab countries. In spite
of tremendous dificulties
they have been eco-
nomically and socially
absorbed by the state of
Israel. The Arab refugees
were deliberately herded
by Arabs into refugee
camps, devoid of condi-
tions for a decent life, to
become a political and
propaganda tool in the
hands of Arab govern-
ments in their fight
against the existence of
the state of Israel.
All 22 independent Arab
states have contributed less
than five percent, to
UNRWA (United Nations
Relief and Works Agency)

funds used toward Palesti-
nian relief. The government
of Israel contributed $10
Million to UNWRA support
of Arab refugees, more than
twice that of Jordan, one-
third more than Kuwait,
two-thirds more than
Egypt, 3% times that of
Syria, nearly seven times
more than Iraq.
I agree that a just solution
must be found for the dis-
placed Arab refugees. From
a humanitarian point they
could have been peacefully.
abosrbed in their new coun-
tries.
UN Security Council
Resolution 242 says that
part of any future settle-
ment of the Middle East
conflict must include "a just
settlement of the refugee -
problem." It says "refugee
problem," not Arab refugee
problem.
The Jewish refugees from
Arab lands have legitimate
rights that must also be
considered.

Detroit Pioneers
Should Be Cited

Editor, The Jewish News:
The Detroit Jewish com-
munity has always been for-
tunate to have outstanding,
devoted, idealistic, and
scholarly teachers.
They were the pioneers of
Hebrew education, helped
build the Hebrew school
system, participated in
communal affairs and left a
rich cultural heritage.
They included Aaron
Markson, Abraham
Panush, l joe
and Zalman
liazdan Morris and Ab-
raham ' Lachover, Meir
and Yonina Mathi
s,
Sarah and Rose Pike,
Max Gordon, Joseph
Haggai, Norman Rutten-
berg and Michael
Michlin.
Their names must be per-
petuated.
I propose that a memorial
be established in their
honor and memory. Such a
memorial would also be a
contribution to Michigan
Jewish history.
