MONTREAL (JTA) —
New Democratic Party
leader Ed Broadbent called
on Prime Minister Joe
Clark to immediately an-
nounce that Canada will not
move its embassy from Tel

would restore our tradi-

on Jerusalem," Broadbent
said at a meeting with
representatives of nine
Arab League states in

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Energy Minister Yitzhak
Modai left ISrael for Mexico
on Monday for talks aimed
at ensuring Israel's oil sup-
ply from that country. Oil
contracts are usually signed
in September and October.
It is understood that Modai
was to make preliminary
arrangements- for an
agreement.
Israel buys one million
tons of oil annually from
Mexico. Its annual con-
sumption is seven million
tons.
Meanwhile, Israel and
the United States signed an
agreement guaranteeing
American oil to Israel in the
event of a boycott, as pro-
vided by the Camp David
agreements. A spokesman
for the Energy Ministry
said the pact was for 15
years, but Israel would
make every effort not to
exercise this option, taking
care of its own oil supply
through other countries.

Clark announced last
Saturday that Robert Stan-
field, former leader of the
governing Progressive Con-
servative Party, will serve
as a one-man task force to
study the matter of moving
Canada's embassy to
Jerusalem. Clark said that
Stanfield will begin work-
ing this summer on all ques-
tions pertinent to relations
between Canada and the
Middle East. Stanfield will
visit Arab countries and Is-
rael on a goodwill and fact-
finding mission in the fall.
In an interview published
in the Montreal Star Tues-
day, Egyptian President
Anwar Sadat accused Clark
of undermining peace ef-
forts in the Middle East and
warned that Arab threats
against Canada should be
taken seriously.
He also said that
Canada should demon-
strate an "even-handed"
attitude towards the
Palestinians and said
that he would welcome
discussion on all these
points with Stanfield.
In the same interview
Boutros Ghali, minister of
state for foreign affairs in
Egypt, said that the Cana-
dian government should
"now try to compensate the
idea of moving the embassy
from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem

other side — the Palesti-

Branch Defended
WJC
LONDON — Dr. Stephen
J. Roth, executive director
of the European branch of
the World Jewish Congress,
took issue with a reported
claim by Nathan Perlmut-
ter, national director of the
Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith, that the crea-
tion of an ADL European
Board meant that there
would be Tor the first time a
regular exchange of infor-
mation across national bor-
ders . . . to fashion
strategies and to implement
tactics' in the fight against
anti-Semitism.
"I must assume that
Perlmutter was mis-
quoted," Dr. Roth stated. "I
am sure he must know that
there has been in existence
for decades a European
branch of the WJC in which
24 European Jewish com-
munities participate
through their recognized
central representative
bodies, and a 25th European
country, France, partici-
pates through the represen-
tative and influential
French Section."
Dr. Roth said that within
the framework of the WJC
European branch, these
communities have been
regularly discussing and
coordinating their policies
`across national boundaries'
in fighting and counteract-
ing anti-Semitism.
Moreover, he said, the
communities established a
special subcommittee on
European anti-Semitism to
deal with the day-to-day de-
tails of anti-Semitism in
whatever way it manifested
itself.

'73 War Dead Are Returne
TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
remains of 11 Israeli
soldiers listed as missing in
action since the Yom Kip-
pur War were turned over to
Israel by Egypt this week at
a somber ceremony in El
Arish. The Egyptians pro-
vided an honor guard cora--
manded by a general.
The flag-draped coffins
were received by an Israeli
burial unit headed by the
chief chaplain in the
presence of Gen. Dan Shorn-
ron, commander of the
southern region.
The remains were
placed in army trucks to
be taken to Tel Hashomer
Hospital near Tel Aviv
where pathologists will
attempt to identify the
dead prior to military
funerals. Identification is
expected to be difficult
inasmuch as the Egyp-
tians provided no details
as to the location of the
remains. It was reported
