THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
Diversity Hallmark
f Mrs. Oftra Navon
By- ILAN SEIDNER
Ofira Navon is a trained
psychologist, an ex-army
sergeant, a former beauty
'queen, a housewife, and the
,mother of two small chil-
-,
oxen. She is also Israel's
*ist Lady.
Mrs. Navon has often
compared to Jac-
queline Kennedy. Certainly
first glance, whether on
lion or in the news-
-, there is a_physical
resemblance. But as Mrs.
a von comes into the room,
wearing, an attractive
bower print dress, and glid-
mg lightly on her feet, all
oughts of 'Jackie' are dis-
pelled.
-While her dark brown
eyes and friendly smile are
captivating, the Sabra in
er radiates a matter-of-
factness and down-to-earth
mality that the media,
hich operate in only two
mensions, can never quite
ortray.
In the beginning the
ole of interviewer and
terviewee are reversed.
The President's wife likes
delve into the heart of
the matter. We speak
bout my background.
he mentions that she
as read some things that
have written. Any ap-
prehension which might
have been present before
she entered has long
since dissipated. The
conversation is informal,
more like a chat among
triends than an official
Ntsit.
Creating a, relaxed, less
formal, one might say al-
most intimate atmosphere
important to Mrs. Navon
cause it is part of her phi-
sophy on how Israeli
society should behave.
That is important to me is
hat we return to the at-
osphere of care and con-
ern that existed in pre-
te days," she says.
"An atmosphere of
aternity and solidarity
rid a higher quality of life
ay be one of our sources of
traction for the Jews in
he Diaspora."
-The First Lady's duties
e varied and at times ar-
ous. She is first and
oremost responsible for
tinning the presidential re-
idence. "Also for entertain-
ng thousands of guests
nth, for the way the
ooks, the food that is
erved, the flower ar-
ngements (another hobby
f.hers), the gifts for official
visitors, and so on," she re-
arks, seeming slightly out
of breath.
In addition she must
ttend functions of volun-
ry organizations and oc-
asionally accompany her
ilsband on whirlwind
ours, one day in the
alilee, and the next in Tel
viv. It is a schedule that
a lows little free time for
er children. A six-year-old
ughter, Nira, (who is
opted) and five-year-old-
son, Erez.
- "I am really torn be-
tween the children and

my official duties. I try to
arrange it so that I have
the afternoon and the
hours before their bed-
time free for them, and
put them to bed myself.
But sometimes it doesn't
work out. They are too
young to feel the pressure
of being the president's
children. They still have
their friends and many
toys. Only now they are
lacking what they had
before - a mother totally
free for them alone."
Her interest in children is
not limited to her own. As
First Lady she is patron for
the International Year of
the Child activities in Is-
rael. And as a child psychol-
ogist she headed children's
wards in different hospitals.
She has also worked with
the Ministry of Education_
on a project designed to dis-
cover gifted children from
underprivileged homes.
It isto be expected that a
person with such a rich
background would have
many interests. In order to
channel these interests in a
way that can be beneficial to
the country, Mrs. Navon
has created a foundation
named "Ecpat-Li." This is a
Hebrew word meaning "I
care." It is also an English
acronym for Education,
Culture, Psychology, Art
and Tradition in Israel.
These are the areas in
which Mrs. Navon would
like to exert her influence as
First Lady.
