But it wasn't always like this . . . About 27 years ago, Mitch's was just a little tavern with a family-owned grocery store in' back .. . The only food served were a few things some customers would buy at the store and bring to the tavern, where the Mitchells had a stove. Mother Ella Mitchell and sons Bill and Tony run this - place where today, on a busy night, it's nothing for them to serve a thousand people . . . Greek salads, pizzas, spaghetti, bar-b-q ribs, etc. It had been a while since I had been to Mitch's and the reason was apparent why people say waiting is worth it. Our waitress, Clarice "Charley" Huckaby, had that pretty smile and pleas- ing personality so very con- ducive to relaxed dining .. . Our party made like ,a Chinese restaurant . . . or- dering different things and passing them around . . . pizza, bar-b-q ribs and Greek salad. Before ordering, a unique touch is the large bottle of water placed on your table .. then a basket of hot gar- lic bread made from pizza dough baked there. Mitch's is large and spa- cious now . . . but not enough so . . . By the end of the year, there'll be seating for more than 300 in an- other building . . . The pre- sent site, which the Mitch ells feel is beyond remodel- ing, will become a large parking lot . . . Those- rustic walls and much of the pre- sent decor, even its fainiliar moose head, will be put in the new building. The charisma that makes up Mitch's is more than the crowds that flock there .. . It's more than dining_ in shirt sleeves next to per- ha.ps a bank president, show biz or sports celebrities .. . There's an aura of total re- laxation that seems to put Mitch's • in a class by - itself . . . This could well be its key to success.
