to help bring about the ex-
tradition of Josef Mengele,
the Auschwitz "Angel of
Death," from Paraguay to
West Germany to stand
trial for the-killing of more
than 200,000 children.
Helms introduced a
sense-of-the-Senate resolu-
tion asking the governMent
of Paraguay to aprehend
and extradite Mengele. It
says that Mengele, while
resident doctor at the Au-
schwitz concentration camp
"was responsible for the tor-
ture and death of more than
200,000 children" and "con-
ducted cruel and inhuman
surgery and experiments
upon children to develop
ways to manipulate the
genetic structure of human
beings"
In addition, the Helms
resolution said, Mengele
"worked to develop new
methods of sterilization to
promote acts of genocide
against Jews, Slays and
other European peoples."
The Jewish Tele-
graphic Agency asked

the Paraguyan Embassy
about . Mengele and
Minister Gilberto Caniza
responded that Mengele
"is not in Paraguay."
Caniza said "We hear
from time to time that he
- is in Paraguay" but he in-
sisted he is \not inAhat
country.
"It would be very difficult
for a person to hide - in
Paraguay," he said, noting
its small population. "If
Mengele were in
Paraguay," he added, "his
presence would be de-
nounced not only by the
Paraguyan people as a
whole but by the Jewish,
community there." He ac-
knowledged that Mengele
received Paraguayan citi-
zenship' along with other
Germans who arrived there
after 1945.
Rep. James Blanchard
(D-Mich.) and several other
members of Congress, have
written to President Alfredo
Stroessner of Paraguay and
requested that Paraguay lo-
cate Mengele.

and "The Death Commit-

"The
Jerusalem
Diamond" (Random House)
is a story that moves from
Judea in the da y s-of King
Solomon to the diamond
business of 20th Century
New York. The protagonist,
Harry Hopeman —
diamond dealer, scholar,
New York, sophisticate — is
intrigued when Vatican, Is-

tives, all within several
days, ask him to purchase
the same huge yellow
diamond for them.
Harry_decides to go to
Israel to try to acquire
the stone for the Israeli
government. As he be-
gins to piece together the
history of the ancient
stone, the reader is
transported through
flashbacks to Berlin in
the early part of the cen-
tury, to Holland when it
was the diamond center
of the world, to Spain
during the Inquisition —
reliving the story of the
Jewish people itself.
While he is in Israel,
Harry falls in love with a
.beautiful Yemenite woman.
Their intense love affair not
only forms a counterpoint to
the thrilling search for the
Jerusalem diamond, but of-
fers ( an opportunity to
explore the conflict between
Sephardic and Ashkenazic
Jews in Israel, and the am-
bivalent love-hate relation-
ship that American Jews
have with Israel.
