• Friday, June 29, 1919 21 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Labor Kibutzim Unite After a 28-Year Separation TEL AVIV (JTA) — The two major Labor-oriented kibutz movements in Israel agreed to reunite over the weekend ending a 28-year- old schism that occurred over issues which have long ceased to have any rele- vance for a majority of the members. The consolidation of Kibutz Hameuchad with the Ichud Hakvutzot VeH- akibutzim, was decided at their respective conven- tions, the former held at Kibutz Ha'an in Galilee and the latter at Yifat. Both called on the Kibutz Haartzi movement of Mapam to join with them to create a solid Labor kibutz front. The split came about in 1951 when Mapai kibut- zim broke with Kibutz Hameuchad and merged with the Chever Hakvut- zot to foim the Ichud Hakvutzot VeHakibut- zim. Pro-Achdut Avodah kibutzim remained in the framework of the origi- nal movement. Those events sent shockwaves through the young state, then barely three years old. Families were divided by conflicting loyalties and many kibutz financial enterprises had to be split. Eventually, Mapai and Achdut Haavodah set- tled their differences and merged to form the present Labor Party. But their re- spective kibutz movements remained separated for the next 15 years. Government Splits Over Economy JERUSALEM (JTA) — A sharp controversy has ari- sen within the government and the economic estab- lishment over whether the Treasury should freeze the prices of basic commodities, a course strenuously advo- cated by Premier Menahem Begin for what, critics con- tend, are largely political reasons. Cabinet Secretary Arye Naor announce& Sunday that a decision to freeze prices for an undetermined period was in fact taken at a meeting of the Ministerial Economic Committee attended by Begin. Earlier reports that this was a full Cabinet decision were greeted by strong op- position from Treasury offi- cials, the Bank of Israel and several prominent economists. Finance Minis- ter Simha Ehrlich was said to have been against it but was overruled by Begin. But according to some ministers who participated in yester- day's meeting, no formal de- cision on prices was 'taken and none was expected until the Cabinet meets again in regular session this Sun- day. The Premier seemed to be reacting to angry pro- tests that greeted the latest price hikes. He de- clared last week that in- flation was a "disease that can be cured" and that the time has come to put an end to the inflatio- nary spiral. Treasury officials, how- ever, warned that a freeze would only contribute to in- flation because the public would have more money to spend -on other consumer goods. The Bank of Israel called on the government to cut ministerial budgets proportionately and stated that as long as it is incapa- ble of doing that it should raise prices as previously planned. Israeli dairy farmers went on strike last week creating a severe shortage of milk and its by-products. The purpose is to pressure the government to end its subsidy of imported frozen veal which competes with home-raised poultry. Milk was available, however, for hospitals, the army and in- fants. At the same time, a slow-down by maintenance workers at the Israel Elec- tric Co. has been causing a series of blackouts in Israel, sometimes for a half-hour at a time. The Cabinet on Sunday fired Prof. Assaf Rasinn, director of the govern- ment's economic plan- ning authority, because of his strong public criti- cism of the government's economic policy. The Cabinet acted unanim- ously at the request of Ehrlich who claimed that Rasinn had reneged on a promise not to attack the government at public forums. Rasinn told a newspaper interviewer that "the gov- ernment and the Premier are not serious" about solv- ing economic problems and charged that Begin "is com- pletely out of the economic problems." The court said the 12-year sentence given Jaabari was lenient in view of his age and state of health. The court apparently also took into consideration Jaabari's claim that El Fatah had threatened to harm his daughter, a resident of Be- irut, if he did not cooperate. Slight damage to a con- struction site at the Country Club in the northern outskirts of Tel Aviv was reported by the police after a bomb exploded there last week. There were no casualties.
