16 Friday, June 29, 1919 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS ostal' Authority on Jewish Mayors of American Cities rp By RABBI SAMUEL M. SILVER (A Seven Arts Feature) Bernard Postal knows just about everything that can be known about Ameri- can Jewish history — and a lot of other things too. In case you don't know who Postal is, he is the dean of American Jewish publi- cists, and an author as well. We have some fine histo- rians of American Jewry, most of them rabbis, like Jacob Marcus, Bertram Korn, Abraham Karp et al., but even these professionals will admit that Bernie Postal is a walking encyclopedia. Postal has done public relations for Bnai Brith, and for the Jewish Wel- fare Board. He helps edit the Jewish Digest and the Jewish Week. His books are baedekers of American Jewish histori- cal sites. He's done one on Europe, and another on the Caribbean. He is co-author of a gripping narrative of the birth of Israel, "The Hills Shouted for Joy." As soon as Kansas City elected its first Jewish mayor, Richard Berkley re- cently, Postal sent a piece to all papers listing all of the other Jewish mayors who have led American cities, from Murray Seasongood of Cincinnati, to Dianne Feinstein, who became mayor of San Francisco fol- owing the tragic death of Moscone. Postal informs us that two other Jews (Adolph Sutro and Ben Steinman) _ have sat in the City Hall of San Francisco. The list of big cities which have been graced by Jewish first citizens, according to Postal, are: Cincinnati (which had six of them), New York, Atlantic City, Rochester, Dallas, Omaha, Atlanta, Portland (Ore.), St. Paul, Newark, Min- neapolis, Miami, Albuquer- que, Toledo, El Paso, Gal- veston, Tucson, Phoenix, Sacramento, Fargo, Chat- tanooga, Seattle and Salt Lake City. To which I add Stamford, Conn. (Julius Wilensky) and Greenville, S.C. (Max Heller). 1 WA TCH BANDS 6/29 6-11 pm only Only 33 percent of the Is- raeli labor force is employed in productive activity, one of the lowest totals in the world. 1 SPECIAL ON TRAX 11 Moore's Shoe Repair Evergreen Plaza 12 Mile & Evergreen • • MN =I I= ========= • 1 1 1 O THE REGULAR PRICE OF DIET OR REGULAR We have complete fashions for Holidays, play and camp needs Free Gift Wrapping — Checks — Visa — Bank Americard Honored MMMMMMMMMMMMM TREND SETTERS SALON MIDNIGHT MADNESS FRIDAY ONLY, 10 am to Midnight .
