Under date of June 14, a letter to The Jewish News from the Birmingham Tem- ple, unsigned but identify- ing the writers as "Bir- mingham Temple Board of Directors," defended its right to invite Stone for a lecture but took issue with The Jewish News Commen- tary criticizing the Stone invitation because The Jewish News last year had not similarly criticized the lecture Birmingham Tem- ple sponsored by Rabbi Meir Kahane who appeared in a debate with Rabbi Wine. The critical gripe accuses Kahane of advocating vio- lence against Arabs, imply- ing that his tactics are like the PLO's. Defending its right to sponsor controversial lec- turers like Kahane and Stone, the writers stated: "We did not invite I.F. Stone and Meir Kahane to speak at our temple forum because we endorse their points of view. Our congregation is composed of members whose political and Zionist commitments cover a wide spectrum of opinions. "We invited them because we believe in the value of free inquiry and open de- bate. We do not believe that only speakers who echo the political opinions of the cau- tious establishment should be represented on Jewish platforms. As Menahem Begin can testify from his own experience, the Dias- pora forum is only eager to welcome you after you have achieved popular success. "How can we make pro- gress if we are only willing to listen to ideas after they have become respectable? Where is the Jewish love of freedom that our rabbis are always proclaiming? "We believe that the De- troit Jewish community should imitate the state of Israel in its willingness to allow all Jews who regard themselves as patriots the opportunity to speak and to be heard." PARIS (JTA) — Egyptian Vice President Hosni Mubarak said here that France will continue to sup- ply Egypt with arms and planes and will play an active role in organizing Egyptian defense systems. Mubarak, who met with French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing, is in Paris to continue arms talks with the French and to visit the International Air Show at Le Bourget. France is al- ready supplying Egypt with Alpha jet training and ground support planes, helicopters and electronic equipment. The Egyptians are also planning to start first assembling and then building the new Mirage- 2000 is a powerful and fast combat plane, but far less effective than its American counterparts. Several Arab states, in- cluding Saudi Arabia, are considering acquiring the plane. King Hussein of Jor- dan said that Jordan will soon buy French-made Mirage combat planes including the Delta winnged Mirage-2000 and 4000 models. The King, who watched an overflight demonstration of Mirages, said the Jor- danian Air Force will first acquire the F-1 and later the newer models. French officials believe that unless Jordan obtains large-scale financial assis- tance from Saudi Arabia and the other Arab oil pro- ducing countries, it will not be able to afford more than a token Mirage force. • What is the most Important Jewish Publication of the 20th Century? the "It is the, duty of every Jewish parent to have the Encyclopedia Judaica in their home."
