Gould a Bumbler in 'Escape to Athena' Film

HOLLYWOOD — Elliott
Gould, in the forthcoming
picture "Escape to Athena,"
appears as a foppish, quite
obnoxious American night
club entertainer caught by
the Germans during the
height of the struggle for
the conquest of Europe in a
remote corner of the Greek
archipelago.
Presented by Sir Lew
Grade, the British-U.S. co-
production is photographed
entirely on the Island of
Rhodes, and is not unlike
the cliche anti-Nazi
pictures of World War II
with stereotyped villains
and heroes. The story treats
the oppression of the civi-
lians in occupied countries
as a giant hoax characteriz-
ing the German military as
not-too-bright bullies, cow-
ards and traitors.

officer and commander of
the prisoner-of-war camp
(which looks - more like a
health resort), Moore helps
the captives not only to es-
cape but also is assisting
them to kill off his own men.
Not a likely story! The
star-studded cast remains
indistinguishable, except
for Telly Savalas who por-
trays a forceful guerrilla
leader.
"HANOVER STREET,"
written and directed by
Peter Hyams for producer
Paul N. Lazarus III (who is
also backed by Lew Grade)
takes us back to World War
II and the city of London. A
romantic yarn, it is just as
unrealistic and old-fasioned
in design as "Escape to
Athena," but more mature
and dignified.
The accent is not as much
on the struggle for survival
of the British people during
the blitz but on a love
triangle.
The German soldiers (this
time in war-torn France)
hunt Allied flyers who are
on a secret mission and are
just as stupid as those in
"Escape to Athena." Harri-
son Ford is the American
officer who falls in love with
Lesley-Anne Down who in
turn is married to Christ-
opher Plummer. Plummer,
who according to the script
is a very average male —
vulnerable and self-
doubting — is not believa-
ble. He is too suave and
easy-going a performer.
IN "MURDER BY DE-
CREE," Plummer in con-
trast is Sherlock Holmes,
"the world's most sophisti-
cated and illustrious pri-
vate detective." Certainly
not a dull personality.
Neither is he a boring
specimen in the
Canadian-made thriller,
"The Silent Partner," in
which he depicts a sadistic,
implicitly homosexual vil-
lain who slaps women
around before killing them.
ELI WALLACH por-
trays an evil man in Avco-
Embassy's "Winter Kills,"
in the same genre as he did
in yesteryears' "The
Domino Principle." The
current movie advances the
theory that an American
President ( a fictitious char-
acter), shot by coincidence
18 years ago, was a victim of
the inner circle.
He is Joe Diamond, an
enigmatic underworld hit
man who was involved in a
family intrigue which led to
the murder and sub-
sequently was ordered by
the chief of the syndicate to
eliminate the actual assas-
sin. Which sounds familiar!
LORNE GREENE has
coped on the screen with ev-
erything from runaway
horses in the long-running_
television series of
"Bonanza," to falling scen-
ery in the multi-million dol-
lar disater movie "Earth-
quake." But nothing in his
experience, the actor ad-
mits, could have prepared
him for "Battlestar Galac-
tica," a futuristic fantasy in
which he portrays the com-

mander of a colossal man- fleeing the destruction of
of-war careening through their world and searching
outer space trailing behind for a new one called Earth.
