until the bull makes his ap-
pearance. At that point,
everyone — even the local
rabbi — clusters on the roof-
tops and "bravely" throws
javelins, spears, lassos, and
even cross bow bolts at the
poor beast from a safe dis-
tance on high. Miracul-
ously, in the middle of the
confusion, one arrow does
manage to pierce the bull's
neck.
Dr. Lourie, who deliv-
ered a paper on the docu-
ment a year ago at the
Seventh World Congress of
Jewish Studies in
Jerusalem, says that the
mere fact that the spec-
tators were throwing
pointed objects from the
roofs of houses may not in
itself be an anti-Semitic
barb. In Castille, where thig
episode took place, it was
not until the 18th Century
that bullfighting became
the formalized pageant we
know today. Up to that
time, bullfighting, as Dr.
Lourie describes it, was
much more of a "melee."
From some 13th Centry
miniatures, we know that
throwing things from a
higher altitude at the bull
was a common practice.
"Nevertheless, the author
makes a point of saying that
no one is willing to go into
the ring and face the ani-
mal," sayd Dr. Lourie. "This
is meant to conform to the
prevailing stereotype of the

conversant with Jewish
practice. Contact between
Christians and Jews in a
city like Toledo, for in-
stance, was sufficiently
close for a gentile to acquire
a working knowledge of
Jewish customs. One Chris-
tian poet of aristocratic
birth even knew whole lines
of Hebrew prayers and used
them in his anti-Semitic
poetry.
Only a few years after the
poem was written, Jewish
settlement in Spain was to
come to a tragic end. In Cas-
tille, no one saw a Jewish
bullfighter, but by the end
of the inquisition, no one
saw any Jews, at all.

S. Africa Jews
Call for Firing
of Broadcaster

JOHANNESBURG
(JTA) — South African
Jewry is urging the dismis-
sal of a national broadcast-
ing official who has written
a booklet with anti-Semitic
implications, including a
reference to Jews as a "prob-
lem" that requires a "solu-
tion."
The author is Bill Chal-
mers, head of religious pro-
gramming of the publicly
owned South African
Broadcasting Corp. that has
a monopoly over radio and
television in the country.
The South African Zionist
Federation has accused
Chalmers of "a deliberate
attempt to foster anti-
Semitism" and Harold
Rudolph, a Jewish member
of the Johannesburg City
Council, publicly chal-
lenged Chalmer's view.
The booklet, titled "The
Conspiracy of Truth,"
purports to be a "Chris-
tian" response to world
problems. It contains at-
tacks on "international
finance," widely re-
garded as code words for
alleged Jewish domina-
tion of financial institu-
tions, for a "conspiracy"
with Communism. Chal-
mers was born of British
parents in India when
that country was still
governed by Britain.
The author was publicly
rebuked by a Cabinet
Minister and the press sev-
eral years ago when he
made references over the air
to the Protocols of the El-
ders of Zion. More recently
he was rebuked by the
South African Broadcasting
Authority itself. But no
move has been made to dis-
miss him.

time that the Jews were

bullfighting in neighboring
Navarre was on its way to
becoming a real art, prac-
ticed on foot by profession-
als, the Castillians still con-
sidered it a chivalric exer-
cise for noble amateurs.
Thus, it was understood
that bullfighting was not
meant for Jewish participa-
tion.
As to who wrote the poem,
Dr. Lourie opts in favor of a
member of the bishop's
household. She considers it
possible that the author
may have been a Converso,
a misguided ex-Jew who
endorsed his newfound
Christianity by penning
anti-Semitic poetry. Such
verses, written by Conver-
ses, were not unknown in
late medieval Castille.
On the other hand, Lourie
also points out that the In-
quisition had to have clerks
