THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, June 22, 1979 11 Unanimity in Support of Israel Called for at JNF Trib ute Dinner By HEIDI PRESS Appealing for Jewish unanimity in support of on- going negotiations for peace in the Middle East, Phillip Klutznick, head of the World Jewish Congress, said that all Jewish efforts "must go to securing the first Jewish state in 2,000 years." Speaking Wednesday night at a Jewish National Fund tribute dinner in honor of Edythe and Joseph Jackier at Cong. Shaarey Zedek, Klutznick said that the JNF was the "peaceful pursuit of the Jewish people" of "land holy to us today. But the land is no good unless people fructify it. "Land and people without security is an impossible equation," he said. "We want to fulfill the ambition of the JNF — to acquire the land peacefully. "To do less is not be Jewish, to do less is not to follow the example of what we're doing here tonight." He said "we have the re- sponsibility to become in- formed. We must under- stand the period through which we're passing. What we want this time is peace, not just the end of war. "Peace is a condition of man where he's relieved of the burdens of armed engagement . . . where he can relieve the wars of de- privation." He added that "we are committed to Israel and peace — peace by negoti- ation. One problem that obsesses Jews all over the world is the safety, security and future of Is- rael. Until that is solved constructively . . . all else will be in second place." Klutznick called parti- sanship unwise and obstructive to progress and advised caution before re- sorting to haste in judging developing what is often considered a crisis. Klutznick added that the Middle East situation is "a unique problem of modern times. Israel Egypt and the U.S are trying to solve the problems of people not sit- ting with them. "It is a bad time for Jews to get involved in the argu- ment publicly. It can only be decided by open and direct negotiations by Egypt, Is- rael and the U.S. Our goal is to encourage the negotia- tions." Alluding to a recent speech in Detroit by anti-Israel journalist, I. F. Stone, Klutznick said that "sometimes we need the stimulus of that kind of question — as long as it doesn't come too fre- quently." He said the drop- outs should have a greater understanding so that they will make "an intelligent decision" to go to Israel. Regarding Jewish educa- tion, Klutznick said it was "a plight gnawing at the vi- tals of Jewish life." He said the costs of Jewish day schools were "driving com- munity after another mad," but "it is a cost we must face." Referring to the plight of Iranian Jews, the world Jewish leader stated, "If I could find an answer for the Iranian Jews, I would not only be crowned king of the Jews, but king of the world." The dinner also was the occasion to recognize the es- tablishment of the Edythe and Joseph H. Jackier Ob- servation Terrace in the American Bicentennial Forest in Israel. Addressing the more than 400 dinner guests, Carmi Slomovitz, president of the Greater Detroit Jewish Na- tional Fund Council, said "it is our duty to assure the success and completion" of efforts on behalf of the JNF. Greetings from the Jewish Welfare Federation were read by George (Mike) Zeltzer. Dr. Samuel I. Co- hen, executive vice president of the Jewish Na- tional Fund of America, brought greetings on behalf of Moshe Rivlin, world chairman of the Keren Kayemet Leisrael.
