Danny Raskin's "Pizza lovers should try Buddy's Pizza" James Beard, New York Times Every t hing The Best of Everything HOW HOW CAN YOU GET more exclusive than Res- taurant Duglass on South- field in the Farrell Shop- ping Plaza? . . . Very simple . . . Just go through the opening from his fine res- taurant into next door's 41 Park Lane. Very New Yorky, it has only three tables and some well placed sofas . . . a dance floor . . . with Alex Kalleo's quartet and wonderful songstress Jane Riney .. . Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The name 41 Park Lane comes from Duglass being 13,30,7siiciL1441,-fiii.eZ11:ihne- tage. Its elegant decor is breathtaking ... with half the room completely mirrored . . . huge plants so large the leaves bend at the ceiling . . . one ceil- ing light ... a gorgeous chandelier over the dance floor ... quiet toned carpeting, and full white drapes on the win- dows . . . (The other ceil- ing lights are only put on for daylight lighting of the plants.) Without a doubt when Restaurant Duglass next door is crowded, this is one of the most beautiful hold- ing areas to be found any- where . . . Think of it . . . in- around stead of st waiting fs oraT 3IrslUn rgt Ieoc. having to sit around at a bar, people can relax in the lap of luxurious comfort on a soft sofa, sip a drink, dance or listen to the very fine song stylings of Alex Kalleo (piano, bass guitar, drums and sax). Jane Riney is perhaps among the best female voc- alists in our town . . . sing- ing Billie Holiday, Cole Por- ter, Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand . . . favorite nos- talgic tunes . . . or dancing herself while singing "Cabaret" . . . Her magnifi- cent presentation is equaled only by a wonderful person- ality that imbues a most comforting talent. Having dinner at one of the three tables is a delight . . . Restaurant Duglass evening maitre d' and man- ager, Margo Poscher, in her expensive, custom-made tux, greeted us most courte- ously . . . and Choron Mos- coe.in a black gown was our very efficient, cordial and smilingly delightful wait- ress . . . after being seated by pretty hostess Christine Powell in a red dress. Dinner seemed to be a secondary thing this eve- ning after discovering that the Alex Kalleo Quartet was playing there ... plus Jane Riney (you may know her as Jane Pricer, one time of Mel Ball & Colours) the songstress. But dining at Restaurant Duglass is always an ele- gant experience . . . not for dieters as Chef Duglass readily admits . . . but French cooking at its excel- lence. Following a most delici- ous lobster bisque and a wonderful salad, enjoyment was complete with delicious Dover sole in cream sauce, shallots, white wine and a light tomato sauce . . . ele- gantly prepared and so very good. A bottle of Riesling Spaetlese white wine was brought over and opened by Manuel Chavez, normally day maitre d' . . . and one of the best in his field .. Manuel was among those who found the Bonaventure doors in Troy closed when he came to work a short while ago. When we came in, Pamela Stansbury was at the piano playing cocktail and dinner music fro _ m 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.. Duglass makes his own pastries, soups and sauces in between running what is fast becoming the premier dining spot in the Met- ropolitan Detroit area. Besides being an excel- lent chef, Duglass is a very sturdy person . . . Imagine him sitting at our table hav- ing dinner only five days after falling on his head from a ladder and being knocked unconscious while working on the restaurant air conditioning. The food is superb . . . the atmosphere and decor true elegance . . . and now 41 Park Lane next door .. . with its music for dining and dancing . . . a truly fine complement in the creme de lacreme combination of Restaurant Duglass. TOM BOOTH is the fine young man doing such a good job as manager at the Steak 'n Ale on Northwest- ern and 10 Mile. JAZZ BUFFS AND lov- ers of great music can flock now to Topinka's Country House, W. Seven Mile and Telegraph . . . That's where J.C. Heard's quartet is play- ing Tuesdays through Saturdays for listening and dancing. J.C. is among the best in the business (the Encyclopedia of Jazz calls him one of the best drum- mers of all time) . . . and a. very capable entertainer with that ever-present smile on each note of every song . . . Listing the names of folks he has played with down through the years would read like a Who's Who in show biz. His quartet (standing bass, piano, sax and drums) plays plenty of happy music . . . with a repertoire that includes everything you can name in jazz, blues, Latin- American and standards like "Body and Soul" etc... . J.C. is on vocals and drums. Wait til you hear him play some real low down blues like "Jelly Jelly" among others.
