Lown Distinguished Serv- ice Award which will be presented to him at the col- lege's commencement exer- cises on Sunday. Berman will be cited for "exemplary leadership in the further- ance of the cultural and eadcational vitality of the American Jewish commu- nity." -Active in the Detroit Jewish community, Be- rman also has served as chairman of the board of the American Association for Jewish Education, and is an active leader of the Council of Jewish Federations. For several years he chaired the Council's National Com- mittee on CommUnity Planning and Financing of Jewish Education. He is a graduate of Har- vard College and the Har- vard Business School. Berman wrote the Lown committee, ". . my com- mitment to Jewish educa- tion has been no more self- less than the commitment of any of us who work on be- half of the American Jewish community. All of us have gotten as much personal satisfaction as we may be perceived to have given. "All of us have ego, energy, and self- conceived management ability which 'leadership' gives us a chance to exer- cise and satisfy . . . flat- tered as I am by the medal itself, I am particu- larly delighted to be associated with the name of Philip Lown." The medal was created by the board of trustees of He- brew College in 1971, to re- cognize outstanding na- tional lay-leadership in Jewish education.
