"Pizza lovers should try Buddy's Pizza"
James Beard, New York Times
The Best of Everything )
(Continued from Page 32)
enjoy — and I gained five
pounds. Dear Detroiters, it
was worth it!
"In the 15 years that the
Frumkin family has re-
turned again and again to
the great food at Como's, on
Woodward at Nine Mile Rd.,
the owners, George and
Sicilia Grego, and their
families, have become our
`Italian family.'
"Sicilia knew of my
oral cravings from letters
and when I arrived at
Como's I was im-
mediately seated and told
to be prepared for a feast.
First, I was served an an-
tipasto with hot garlic
bread. The Italian dres-
sing on this salad is so
special, I considered tak-
ing a jar of it back to Is-
rael to share with friends.
"Next came hot and tasty
minestrone soup, followed
by linguini with clam sauce
— the spiciest best! After all
that, Sicilia, knowing that
I'd have a hard time choos-
ing an entree, just brought
me Italian baked chicken
and spare ribs and shrimp
(the shrimp are very spe-
cial, coated with crumbs
and sesame seeds before
deep-frying).
"Unfortunately, I had no
room for George's pizza,
named tops by the Oakland
Press in their Great Pizza
Hunt last winter. (Gosh, I
could have told them that!)
"But my very favorite
ethnic food is Mexican. I
ring all the Taco Bells I can
find, and know most of De-
troit's Mexican restaurants.
My favorite is Mexican Vil-
lage, on Bagley in Detroit. I
rate it No. 1— and very af-
fordable.
"My favorite item is the
Botanas appetizer plate:
appetizers for four, a nice
meal for two, or a very large
meal for one. The price:
$4.40 the plate. The ingre-
dients: taco chips, beans,
melted cheese, onions,
olives, tomatoes, and fresh
avocado slices. It is best to
eat this only when with
good friends, for it's finger-
food and it can get messy.
"My all-time favorite
Chinese restaurant is still
Hoa Kow, on Nine Mile
Rd. in Oak Park. Nothing
is more scrumptious than
their 'silver needle noo-
dles' and they also serve
the best 'lemon chicken'
in town. If you're lucky,
you may be able to get
their whole fish, cooked
with a fantastic sauce,
and garnished like a pic-
ture out of a gourmet
cookbook.
"The secret at the Hoa
Kow is ordering from their
`other' menu — more Hong
Kong style than Cantonese.
I selected Hoa Kow for my
last meal in Detroit — and
chose well!
"I was in for a nice treat
when my parents took me to
Little Hungaria, on 12 Mile
Rd. east of Greenfield. I
have strong advice for any-
one not familiar with this
restaurant:- be very hun-
gry. The portions are tre-
mendous and the food just
gets better.
"I re-visited many of the
Chuck Muer restaurants —
the ribs at the Sundog, in
Dearborn, are extraordi-
nary — but I had never been
to Charley's Crab and my
father said I must see this
beautiful place. It is beauti-
ful, and since it was my
father's birthday, we (our
whole family, plus my
friend Judie Cohen) cele-
brated it in style — from
almost impossible to get in
Israel and therefore
much-missed lobster, to
their famous red chowder,
served in a bucket, to their
wonderful chocolate minted
sauce over French vanilla
ice cream. 0, yes — Dad
picked up the tab.
"Another new-to-me
restaurant is Nero's in
the Men Cen.' Again, the
atmosphere was fantas-
tic, but here the food was
only fair. It really is a pity
that such a beautiful
place should fall so short
in the area that counts.
"Yet, despite the occa-
sional disappointment,
Detroit can be proud of
her eating places. Res-
taurants like the Bread
Basket in the Lincoln
Center, Laikon's on Mon-
roe in Greektown, Har-
bor House, the 'all-you-
can-eat' spot on Tele-
graph in Redford, and of
course the never-to-be-
forgotten Big Boy ham-
burgers — here is eatin'!
Not even working out at
America's newest craze,
disco roller skating,
could keep the pounds
from creeping on.
"Well, that is enough re-
miniscing for me for now.
It's back to the reality of eat-
ing felafels in Jerusalem.
It's a good thing I like them.
Besides, you Detroiters may
have the fantastic restau-
rants, but you'll have to
admit, you can't beat my
view!"
