Tunisians Probe
Synagogue Fire

PARIS (JTA) — The
French daily "Le Matin Di-
manche" quotes an uniden-
tified Jewish woman who
says she saw three men
enter the Djerba synagogue
just before a fire broke out
on May 9.
The 24-year-old woman
says she saw the three men
approach the synagogue at
10:30 p.m. and "force their
way in." A few minutes la-
ter, she saw them leave the
building.
The paper also quotes
Tunisian Chief Rabbi Fradji
Uzan who repeated his con-
viction that the authorities
are doing everything in
their power to -find the ori-
gin of the fire.

Swastikas Out;
Offensive Car
Plate Recalled

LOS ANGELES (JTA) —
Swastikas will no longer be
provided by a Mattel sub-
sidiary, Monogram Models,
Inc., for decoration of scale
model reproductions of his-
toric aircraft, ships and ve-
hicles, according to the
Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith.
The Mattel decision is
based on a recent decision of
a West German Supreme
Court forbid-ding the
further use or display of the
Nazi swastika with any
consumer products, packag-
ing or promotional material
produced or marketed in
West Germany.
The Mattel decision not to
provide optional swastikas
also applies to its domestic
and all its international
markets.
The ADL also reported
that a "Hitler" California
environmental license plate
has been recalled by the De-
partment of Motor Vehicles.

Adviser on Arabs

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Hebrew University Prof.
Moshe Maoz, a noted'
Arabist, has been named
adviser on Arab affairs to
Defense Minister Ezer
Weizman.
Maoz, 44, regarded as a
hardliner by his academic
colleagues, is an expert on
Moslem history and current
happenings in the Arab
world. He replaces another
Hebrew University expert,
Menahem Milson, who is re-
turning to academic life.
