I.F. Stone's speech at the
Birmingham Temple Mon-
day evening was distin-
guished more by what was
not covered than by the
speaker's condemnation of
Israel, in a session devoted
to "Prospects for Peace in
the Middle East."
Stone, a Washington
journalist who has sided
with the Arab cause since
he reversed positions after
Israel's 1948 War for Inde-
pendence, spent an hour
Monday attacking Israel
and her peace negotiating
positions. He neglected,
however, to devote more
than a fraction of his speech
to similar criticism or
critique of the Arab posi-
tion.
In his major points of the
evening, Stone attacked Is-
rael for denying the Pales-
tinians the right of self-
determination, for closing
Bir Zeit University on the
West Bank, for arresting
leaders of the Palestinian
movement and curbing free
speech.
He said Israel was an

occupying army on the
West Bank and Gaza in
defiance of international
laws "that were estab-
lished after Hitler's oc-
cupying armies" were de-
feated in Europe. It was
one of several parallels
drawn between Israel
and the Nazis by Stone.
He also drew an analogy
to Poland, stating that once
Poland gained its indepen-
dence Polish nationalism
"overcame Poland's great
liberalism" and this led to
Poland's anti-Semitism and
mistreatment of minorities.
Not once, however, did
Stone make similar com-
parisons to the Arabs, and it
was not until the
sometimes - stormy
question-and-answer ses-
sion that a person in the
audience queried Stone
about the far more grievous
mistreatment of Jews by the
Arabs, the failure of the
Arabs to help the Palesti-
nians or allow the Palesti-
nians self-determination
while Jordan controlled the
West Bank and Egypt con-
trolled the Gaza Strip be-
tween 1948 and 1967.
Stone said peace would
fail if the question of the
Palestinians was not ad-
dressed. He said the Begin
government's autonomy
proposal was "an insult." He
said a failed peace would
lead to renewed warfare,
this time leading to the de-
struction of cities like
Damascus, Cairo,
Jerusalem: "the world's
great treasures."
He advocated U.S.
pressure to bring about a
mutual recognition of Is-
rael and the Palestine
Liberation Organization.
He said this mutual
recognition would lead to
an end to terrorism
"which hasn't done the
Arabs a darn bit of good."
He condemned ter-
rorism.
But Stone also con-
demned Israel and the gov-
ernment of Menahem Begin
throughout his speech. Is-
rael was painted as inflexi-
ble in its negotiating posi-
tions and as the oppressor of
the poor Palestinians.
Several times he said the

You are what you wear. And that includes what's on your feet.
So if you want your shoes to say something nice about you,
slip into a comfortable pair of French Shriner's like these.
The horn motif means you insist on soft, supple leather.
It says you have good taste, very subtly.

Historical Role

WALTHAM, Mass. —
Saul Viener of Richmond,
Va., was elected president of
the American Jewish His-
torical Society at the organ-
ization's annual meeting in
April.

Since 1949, more than
150,000 Israelis have
graduated from ORT
schools.

U.S. has much to lose in the
Middle East and cited the
U.S. dependence on Middle
East. He received heavy
applause from the Bir-
mingham Temple audience
when he said, "All of us
have to help Israel. But Is-
rael has an obligation to
conduct itself in a manner
that will not damage the
Jews' position in the Dias-
pora."
Leaflets were distrib-
uted before the meeting
by the Detroit District of
the Zionist Organization
of America and the Con-
ference of Jewish Ac-
tivists. The materials at-
tacked Stone's positions.
During the heated
question-and-answer period
Stone was attacked for over-
looking the PLO Covenant
to destroy Israel. There
were a number of angry
outbursts from members of
the audience.

* * *
In his Shavuot sermon,
Saturday, at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek, Rabbi Irwin Groner
was severely critical of the
sponsorship of a lecture by a
Jew whose journalistic re-
cord is so detrimental to Is-
rael. He said it is not enough
to criticize non-Jewish an-
tagonists, that when a Jew
is harmful to truth about Is-
rael, he, too, should be
equally repudiated.
