Alice, the baby baboon pictured above, was the
first monkey to be born at the Weizmann Institute of
Science. The baby baboon will be observed by the
institute's brain and behavior group, who will watch
her development and amass data based on the in-,
teraction between the infant 9,nd her mother
throughout her early life. A study vAll be conducted to
see if Alice recognizes herself in a mirror, as most
human children do by age 19 months or so. The ba-
boons have been used extensively as models of var-
ious brain disorders — such as manic-depression —
and for studies of the effects of various drugs on be-
havior.
