Woman Receives
PhD at Dropsie

PHILADELPHIA - For
only the third time in its
70-year history, a woman
will have earned the PhD
degree from The Dropsie
University. The degree will
be given to Mrs. Diane A.
King, of suburban
Plymouth Meeting, Pa. A
major in modern Jewish
history, Mrs. King is a con-
sultant for the division of
community services at
Gratz College here.
The only other women
ever to earn a PhD degree at
Dropsie were Diana J.
Reisman in 1937 and
Dorothy G. Axelroth, of
New York, in 1968. The
only woman ever to be
awarded an honorary de-
gree from Dropsie was the
late Golda Meir, former
prime minister of Israel.

Sabbath Haggada

NEW YORK — A
guidebook to help Jewish
families mark the onset of
Sabbath at the Friday eve-
ning dinner is being pre-
pared by the American
Jewish Committee.
"Shabat Haggada:
Readings and Rituals for
Friday Night at Home," will
contain an outline for prep-
aration for the Sabbath as
well as a compendium of the
traditional rituals for the
Sabbath eve meal. There
will also be a contemporary
explanation of each of these
rituals, their significance
and origin, and 12 texts of
readings from Jewish liter-
ature, each grouped around
a particular theme.

Violinst Pinchas Zuc-
kerman has been named
music director of the St.
Paul Chamber Orchestra,
beginning in the 1980-1981
season.
Zuckerman, presently
music director of the South
Bank Festival in London,
has been conducting with
increasing frequency. The
St. Paul is the only full-time
chamber orchestra in the
U.S.

is the aim of research being
done-at the Hebrew Univer-
sity by the incumbent of the
new Dr. Marcus Rabwin
Chair in Cancer Research
and Experimental
Medicine.

U.S. Sephardis

Print Magazine

NEW YORK — The
Sephardi Jewish commu-
nity in the United States is
awakening, determined to
win new respect, writes
Liliane Levy Winn in the
first issue of the American
Sephardi Federation's new
magazine, Sephardi World.
Ms. Winn, ASF president,
urges Sephardim to con-
tinue to speak up for them-
selves and their culture,
and Ashkenazim to appre-
ciate Sephardi contribu-
tions to Judaism.
The first issue of Sephardi
World lists the accom-
plishments and goals of
ASF and its parent organ-
ization, the World Sephardi
Federation, headed by Dr.
Nessim D. Gaon in Geneva.

Dr. Rabwin, a prominent
U.S. surgeon from Los
Angeles, and his wife Mar-
cella, were guests of honor
recently at a dinner for the
dedication of the chair.
Also, cancer research at
the Hebrew University re-
ceived a major boost with
the establishment of a re-
search fund in the name of
Las Vegas banker Jerome
Mack and his wife, Joyce.

Growth of Elderly

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — Is-
rael had 28,000 elderly
among its 720,000 citizens
in 1948. The general popu-
lation of Israel has grown
five times in 30 years, while
the elderly population has
grown nine-fold.
According to the news-
paper Davar, some 10,000
elderly need nursing home
care but Israel has only
6,000 nursing home beds.

Refugee Training

NEW-YORK (JTA) —
Fifty-two refugee profes-
sionals are undergoing job
training under the auspices
of the American Council for
Emigres in the Professions.
The refugees are receiv-
ing training in either watch
repair or piping design.

There are more than 200
Moslem clergy in Israel, all
paid by the state. Services
are Conducted in more than
90 mosques.
