The decision was taken
following severe criticism in

with Divine embrace.

"Ye' shall be Holy unto me
For I the Lord am Holy"
Thus spoke God to Israel,

In the heart of all Israelites
Did find their abode.

We re-new our covenant with God
We are grateful and we pray.

The Feast of Weeks,
And the day of the first fruit offering
Of which the Bible speaks.

UN Commission

Israeli

JERUSALEM ( JTA) —
Israel will not admit a
three-man United Nations
commission currently in
Jordan to "examine the
situation relating to the set-
tlements." Neither will Is-
rael cooperate with that
commission in any way, the
foreign ministry announced
here.
The commission is corn-
prised of representatives
from Bolivia, Portugal and
Zambia. It will report back
to the Security Council by
July 1, and the council will
hold a special session dur-
ing July "to review the situ-
ation in light of the commis-
. sion's findings."
The Security Council
created the commission
March 22 following a debate
on the Israeli occupation in-
itiated by Jordan. The U.S.
Britain and Norway
abstained.

Ultimately there can be
no freedom for self unless it
is vouchsafed for others.

Shavuot: Greenery Holiday

By RABBI SAMUEL FOX

(Copyright 1979, JTA, Inc.)

Some congregations deco-
rate the synagogue with
greens on Shavuot because
it brings to mind the origi-
nal agricultural nature of
the festival.
In the days of the Holy
Temple in Jerusalem, the
people would bring the first
fruits of the harvest to the
Temple on this holiday.
Since we have no temple in
Jerusalem at present, the
synagogue symbolizes the
temple and thus it is cus-
tomary among some Jews to
decorate the synagogue,
with some green growths on
this holiday.
Secondly, the decorations
relate to the anniversary of
the Revelation which took
place on Mt. Sinai on this
date when the Ten Com-
mandments were given. At
that time, the rabbis claim
the mountain, which usu-
ally was bare, miraculously
broke out into a rich green
foliage.
A barren people thus
became productive
scholars and became the
instrument through
which the learning and
inspiration of the Al-
mighty was given to the
world.
Some authorities objected
to this practice; neverthe-
less, it survived as a re-
spected practice among
many congregations. It is
also interesting to note the
connection between the
practice and the claim that
the fruits of the trees are
judged on this holiday. It is
for this reason. that some

congregations had small
trees decorating the
synagogue on this holiday
to demonstrate the judge-
ment of the trees.
In general, there isa simi-
larity betwen the concept of
Torah learning and trees.
The Torah was described as
a "tree of life" which sus-
tains "those that take hold
of it."
Thus, the holiday that
commemorates the Revela-
tion of the Torah at Sinai
finds the synagogue deco-
rated with leaves, branche
and trees to indicate tha.
Jewish Torah and learning
is refreshing, productive
and ever growing like the
trees of nature.
It is also claimed that the
greens and plants in the
synagogue indicate that the
Jewish people have been
like the biblical "Lily
amongst the Thorns"
throughout their long and
arduous history.
