Klein Youth Award to Temple Israel's youth group. Honorable mention awards were pre- sented to Cong. Beth Shalom's United Synagogue Youth Chapter and to Jack Benny AZA of the Bnai Brith Youth Organization. The Walter E. Klein Youth Award is given for excellence in social action, education and Jewish iden- tification. The award hon- ors the Council's retired executive director. The winning project was the involvement of the Temple Israel youth group with the Association for the Jewish Retarded. Last year, 10 members of the youth group held a Hanuka party for the 12 residents of the AJR's residential homes. After a buffet dinner, menorot were lighted by each of the residents and Hanuka songs were sung by the entire group. Each resident received a Hanuka gift from a "grab bag." This was followed • by disco dancing and sing-along. The youth group spon- sored a six-hour dance-a- thon, which raised $1,000 for the AJR. The highlight of this event was the par- ticipation, during the final two hours of the dance, by the residents of the associa- tion's homes. At Beth Shalom USY's annual Camp Tamarack Retreat, each member of USY and Kadima USY made a stuffed pillow which was donated to a children's ward at a local hospital. Jack Benny AZA sponsored a 24-hour dance marathon for the benefit of muscular dystrophy. More than $1,200 was raised. Rhea Appelman, trea- surer of the Jewish Com- munity Council, presented the awards. Selection of the winning nominations were conducted by the Council's Youth Awards Committee, a subcommittee of the Council's Internal Relations-Culture Commit- tee. Jack J. Bodzin served as chairman of the subcommit- tee, with members Ms. Ap- pelman, Dorothy Kripke, Jeanne Korsh and Esther Rosenblum. be- BAHM Honors Jack Schon at June Israel Bond Dinner Cong.
