As the debate proceeded, word filtered through of the Finance Ministry intention to slash a further IL 3-4 bil- lion ($120-160 million) from this year's annual budget. Finance Ministry sources explained that the atmos- phere engendered in the Cabinet by April's shocking 8.7 percent cost-of-living index leap was particularly favorable to budgetary cuts — and so Simha Ehrlich and his aides are losing no time in preparing a supplemen- tary program of cuts. This will be presented to the Cabinet Sunday — so that the total budget cut which the ministers will be ex- JERUSALEM (JTA) — A series of opposition no- confidence motions on eco- nomic issues were defeated in the Knesset Monday by a majority of 52-44. The no-confidence mo- tions were presented by Labor, Shai and the Communists, and were supported in the votes by other left and liberal fac- tions. Labor leader Shimon Peres flayed the govern- ment for its ostensibly lib- eral economic policy which he said was directly respon- sible for the galloping infla- tion. He warned that the situation was ,leading to a dangerous level of depen- dence on the U.S. Peres dwelt at length on the Labor movement's his- toric contributions to the upbuilding of the country. This prompted Ehrlich, in his reply, to stress the roles of free-enterprise, early farmer-settlers. The historic argument quickly turned into a free- for-all, with Knesseters of various political persua- sions shouting the credits of their various movements achieved decades ago — and degrading the contributions of rival movements. Tuesday, Labor sub- mitted another no- confidence motion — ap- parently part of a deter- mined parliamentary as- sault by the opposition — this one on the state of the housing market. Ehrlich has proposed, in addition to cuts in the na- tional budget, a freeze on civil service hiring, higher interest rates on develop- ment loans and periodic in- creases in the value-added tax to reduce Israel's infla- tion rate. Bedouins Force Airfield Change TEL AVIV (JTA) — Diffi- culties arising from the ex- propriation of Bedouin lands have led American construction circles to abandon their plans to build a large military airfield at Tel Malhata in the Negev, it was reported from Beersheba. The Americans will build two smaller airfields, one near Mitzpeh Ramon and the other near Yotveta while the main base at Tel Mahata will be built by Is- rael. Israel Founders' Memorials Ok'd JERUSALEM (JTA) — State memorial services will be held from now on at the gravesides of Theodor Herzl, Chaim Weizmann, Zeev Jabotinsky and David Ben-Gurion, the Cabinet decided Sunday. The decision came at the suggestion of Premier Menahem Begin. The cere- monies for Herzl and Jabotinsky will be held on Mt. Herzl in Jerusalem; and for Weizmann at his grave in Rehovot. The Ben-Gurion cere- mony will be held at Sde Boker in the Negev. Ford Worker Called a Nazi NEW YORK — Approx- imately 30 members of Con- cerned Jewish Youth in- vaded the New York offices of Ford Motor Co. last week and demanded that the firm fire a Cleveland worker they alleged was a Nazi camp guard in Poland dun ing World War II. The students occupied the offices for four hours: Re- cent stories in the Cleve- land and Chicago papers say that the employee, Ivan Demjanjuk, a Ford plant mechanic for 25 years, was a guard at Treblinka. Rio De Janeiro Visit Canceled by Iraqi VP The Joint Distribution Committee helps support 160 yeshivot in Israel with more than 24,000 students. RIO DE JANEIRO, (JTA) — "Let the Mayor be sick," was the suggestion of some Brazilian officials in dis- cussing the problem of whether Iraqi Vice President Taha Marouf should come to Rio de Janeiro on his forthcoming visit to Brazil because this city now has a Jewish mayor. Later Foreign Office offi- cals and members of the Iraqi Embassy agreed that Marouf would avoid Rio de Janeiro when he arrives in Brazil in early June to seek Brazilian participation in two projects costing $24 bil- lion, a harbor on the Yambu River and a military base.
