AL COHEN, president of the Kosher Meat Dealers Association, sends two WWJ Radio broadcasts by Esther Shapiro, Detroit's consumer affairs director, which he feels readers would enjoy reading . . . and certainly of much interest to many. Her broadcast of April 5, 1979, "A few weeks ago I commented on some new trends in the dog food mar- ket, in which fancy, spe- cialized brands are pushing ordinary, low-cost pet foods off the shelves. You can buy high-protein dog food for the picky pups, lo-cal for the fat- ties and, if the government approves, a product contain- ing birth control chemicals for frisky lady dogs. "Now, out of hot little minds of an advertising group comes the latest — kosher dog food, according to Advertising Age. Mother Klein's Kosher Style can- ned dog food is the creation of three ad men and the head of a novelty marketing company. They were look- ing for a new gimmick — perhaps a useful pet rock. They tested the idea by buy- ing a dog food already on the market, and put it up for sale with their own label. "Actor Herschel Ber- nardi, who once starred in a stage version of Fid- dler on the Roof, is fea- tured in ads discussing the difficulties in deter- mining whether or not a dog is Jewish. He says this problem arose when many dogs anglicized their names as they came to this country. As an example, he cites the Goldberg retriever. "The ad campaign was tested in Fresno, Calif., an area with few Jews and many Armenians. The re- sponse was encouraging. "Kosher Style" was in- cluded in the name of the product because tests have shown that the word kosher is perceived by most people as indicating a cleaner, more nutritious product. Of course the dog food is not kosher at all — a ritual process which has nothing to do with nutri- tion; but one of the promot- ers says, "it means the dog food is made with the care, tradition and quality of kosher foods."
