For the past four years, a
congregation started by a
Reform rabbi has been func-
tioning in Manhattan in
which almost half of the
member couples are mixed
marrieds and no require-
ment exists that the non-
Jewish mate need convert to
Judaism.
Rabbi Roy Rosenberg, a
member of the Central Con-
ference of American Rabbis
(CCAR), reported on his
Temple of Universal
Judaism — Congregation
Daat Elohim (Knowledge of
God) — in "Sh'ma" maga-
zine.
Asserting that Jews who
intermarry are "just like
Jews who don't," Rabbi
Rosenberg said that such
Jews "run the entire gamut
of religious and ethnic pos-
sibility — from those who
are strongly Israel-oriented
and observant of Sabbath
and dietary structures to
those who couldn't care less
about any Jewish tie (except
possibly to satisfy the ex-
pected conventions at mar-
riages and death)."
He resigned as rabbi of
Beth Sholom Congrega-
tion in Brooklyn in 1975
to form Daat Elohim to —
among other objectives
— "serve the needs of
those intermarried
families who feel es-
tranged from the estab-
lished- institutions of
Judaism." There are

As of this moment, every
man, women and child in Is-
rael owes Jimmy Carter and
the American government
$1,700! This is based on the
amount of loan money Is-
rael is obligated to repay the
Americans. The figure
means that a family of four
owes $6,800 or some IL
340,000, which doesn't in-
clude the new loans in the
Israeli-Egyptian peace
package.
From 1949 until 1978 the
U.S. loaned • Israel
$6,516,000,000. Of course,
there have been other na-
tions that have loaned Is-
rael money (especially
Germany) and banks and
individual Jews have pur-
chased Israel Bonds and
these shoot the individual
debt up to $3,700 per indi-
vidual.
The most spectacular
jump in the debt occured
since the Yom Kippur War.
As late as 1969, the debt
was only $735 per Israeli.
After the war it leaped to
$1,553 and today it is
$3,700. The most pressing
problem is the increasing
percentage of this debt
which goes only for interest
repayment. The growing
debt will clearly add to Is-
rael's inflation problem.

Two-thirds of the people
to be helped by Project Re-
newal, the massive plan for
social reconstruction in Is-
rael, are under the age of 26.

more than 100 members
in Daat Elohim.
Rabbi Rosenberg wrote
that while conversion is ac-
cepted by many non-Jews
who wish to marry Jews,
"there is an even greater
number who find it im-
possible" to do so, not be-
cause "they cannot give up
Christian theology but be-
cause conversion and the
ceremonies attendant
thereto would be, they
think, an insult to and a de-
nial of their past, their par-
enthood and the ethnic
identity out of which they
have sprung."
He wrote that Daat
Elohim enables Jews, "and
those non-Jews who wish to
do so," to practice and

preserve "the essentials of
Jewish religious life," from
a Reform perspective.
