- - THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Jewish War Veterans MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVANCE; DEPARTMENT CONVENTION Department of Michigan Commander Sanford Rosenthal, of the Jewish War Vete- rans, urges all members of the Detroit area Jewish Community to join with his organization in the sacred observance of Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, 1979 at services at Machpelah Cemetery, beginning promptly at 10:00 AM. Commander Rosenthal has also announced that the Community is cordially invited to attend the Opening of the Department's 38th Annual Convention at 8:00 PM on Friday, June 1st at the Northland Inn. This Oneg Shabbot will include Friday night religious services; introduction of dignitaries of the military, veterans organizations, officials of every level of government; the awarding of Scholarships to many young men and women for the pursuit of their college aspirations. A nominal charge for refresh- ments. "We must never forget those who made the supreme sacrifice in American wars," stated Commander Rosenthal, "and as Jews, we pay particular homage to our heroic Jewish war dead. We of the Jewish War Veterans are the custodians of the records of their war deeds, but the entire Jewish community basks in the glory of their achievements, therefore one hour a year to remember their names and achievements is, in the very least, the duty and obligation of everyone. We have placed American flags on each of their graves in the Detroit Metro area in every cemetery, but the official ceremony will be at Machpelah." A short service will also be conducted at 8:00 am at Oak Park City Hall. Auxiliary President Diana Joffe mentioned that "as we pay our respectes to the Holocaust victims and valiant Israeli war dead at appropriate times during the year, we can NEVER allow ourselves to forget our fallen men and women of American wars, who gave us this great legacy ... America." JWV Memorial Home Association President Jay Schwartz announced that the Shrine for the Michigan Jewish War Dead at 16990 W. Twelve Mile Road in Southfield will be open between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm on Monday, May 28th (Memorial Day) for visitors. Here the priveless mural Isaiah's Dream, the Golden Book, and the pictures of each of the fallen war heroes may be viewed. The 1979 Convention General Chairpersons WILLIAM and BERTHA GREENBERG call all Michigan JWV and JWVA people to annual Convention at the Northland Inn in Southfield, Michigan. Events following the Friday night June 1st Oneg Shabbot are: Saturday morning services at Congregation B'Nai Moshe. Saturday night June 2nd Commander's Banquet at Northland Inn. Sunday morning Memorial Services at Northland Inn conducted by the Ladies Auxiliary for the members who have died in peace time, and the Business Sessions and Election of Officers all day Sunday June 3rd.
