JNF 'Radiothon'
Ex-Nazi to Head Germany
NEW YORK — The
Jewish National Fund held
a "radiothon" in New York
this month, entitled "Plant-
ing for Peace."
Participants included
radio personality Barry
Farber and JNF's Rabbi
William Berkowitz and
Sam Cohen.
A 10,000-tree forest and
several 1,000-tree groves
were included in the
thousands of dollars
pledged to JNF during the
31/2-hour radiothon.
BONN — The West Ger-
man Parliament elected
former Nazi Party member
Karl Carstens president of
West Germany on Tuesday
in a surprisingly close vote,
as 700 demonstrators
marched outside protesting
Carstens' past Nazi ties.
Carstens joined the Nazis
in 1933 while a law student.
He quit two years later, but
joined again in 1940. He
says it was the only way he
could practice law.
Carstens was cleared by
an Allied de-Nazification
panel after World War II of
any involvement in Nazi

OTTAWA (JTA) — With
the impressive victory of
Joe Clark's Progressive-
Conservative Party in
Tuesday's election in
Canada, two Jewish Liber-
als went down to defeat, in-
cluding Defense Minister
Barnett Danson, who was
rejected by his York North
riding in the Toronto area.
Four Jews were elected,
three Liberals and a
member of the New Demo-
cratic Party (NDP).
Re-elected were Herb
Cray, a former minister and
the first Jew named to a
Liberal cabinet, from
Windsor; and Bob Kaplan,
in the Toronto riding of
York Center. Elected for the
first time were David Be-
rger, a Liberal, in Montreal,
and the NDP's David Orli-
kon, of Winnipeg.

Opposed Clark
TORONTO (JTA) — A
Moslem political action
committee representing 40
local and national Islamic
associations in Canada is-
sued a letter before Tues-
day's Canadian elections at-
tacking eventual winner
Joe Clark, leader of the Pro-
gressive Conservatives.
The letter said Clark's
proposed recognition of
Jerusalem as Israel's capi-
tal has "put a stab in the
hearts of Moslems."

Petah Tikva
Bus Bomb
Kills Two
TEL AVIV (JTA) — A
woman and her child were
killed when a bomb
exploded on top of a bus in
Petah Tikva on Wednesday.
Thirteen other persons in
the bus line were injured,
five of them seriously:
Police cordoned off the
area and arrested 30 sus-
pects for questioning.
A Palestinian terrorist
group in Damascus
claimed credit for the
outrage and for a bomb
attack earlier on Israeli
government offices in
Hebron which caused no
casualties. The Damas-
cus broadcast said ter-
rorists "operating from
within occupied terri-
tory"' were responsible
for the Petah Tikva
bombing.
According to police, the
bomb was concealed in a
plastic bag on the roof of the
bus, above eye level' , and
therefore undetected.
Israeli jets bombed and
strafed three Palestinian
positions in Lebanon at
sundown Wednesday. The
Palestinian Liberation
Organization in Beirut
claimed 14 persons were kil-
led, including civilians, but
observors described one in-
cident in which an anti-
aircraft position • was
bombed.
Lebanese authorities said
the Israeli navy also shelled
the port city of Tyre Wed-
nesday evening.
Two Jewish MPs, Max
Saitman, a New Democrat,
and Jack Marshall, a
Progressive-Conservative
from New Foundland, did
not. seek re-election and
were appointed to the Se-
nate.
JOE CLARK
neille, director of the Bnai
Brith League for Human
Rights, was elected by the
heavy Jewish vote in the
Eglinton-Lawrence riding
of Toronto on the Liberal
Party ticket. Last year, he
refused to accept a nomina-
tion for a by-election be-
cause the election day was
on Sukkot.
The only Jewish can-
didate on the
Progressive-Conservative
Party list was Sidney
Spiwak, who was de-
feated in Winnipeg. In
addition to Danson, the
other Jewish Liberal in-
cumbent defeated was
Sima Holt, a former jour-
nalist, whose loss in a
central Vancouver riding
was part of the
Progressive-Conservative
sweep in Canada's west.
She was the first Jewish
woman elected to Parli-
ament.
Clark, who will now re-
place Pierre Elliott Trudeau
as prime minister, is five
seats short of a majority in
the new Parliament and
will need the NDP or the
Quebec-based Social Credit
Party for a majority. His
promise to move the Cana-
dian embassy from Tel Aviv
apparently had little influ-
ence with the large Jewish
vote in Montreal and To-
ronto.
