THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Israel Project Aims to Close the Cultural Gap RAMAT-GAN, Israel — A dynamic project aimed at reducing Israel's "cultural gap" and providing higher education for the sons and daughters of the country's disadvantaged families is being successfully con- ducted by Bar-Ilan, Israel's only religious-oriented uni- versity. In a one-year program called the— "Micheena" (Preparation), army vete- rans who have not com- pleted their high school matriculation tests are pro- vided all necessary, oppor- tunities to qualify for higher education. The Bar-Ilan Preparatory Department is geared to provide the personal atten- tion required to insure that the ex-soldiers who had lit- tle success in formal school- ing before will acquire an academic-education, to raise future standards for them- selves, their families and their communities. To meet the requirements of need set by the Minis- tries of Defense and Edu- cation, which sponsor the participants, almost all 80 students in the current pro- gram are from diprived non-Ashkenazic back- grounds, except for several disabled Israel Defense Forces veterans. Among the students, 35 are girls who have completed army or non-military national serv- ice. Now! Go H for value! HAWAIIAN PUNCH® Friday, May 18, 1919 1 DRINK MIX. New! 2-Quart Pitcher-Pak. On Wagon' Billy Defends Remarks LOS ANGELES -- Billy Carter, the President's brother, told reporters he will never drink again at a press conference this week at the Long Beach Naval Hospital's alcohol rehabili- tation unit. After talking to reporters about his drinking prob- lems, Carter again defended his role in guiding a Libyan, delegation on a U.S. tour. He said he never repre- sented Libya in any way and that the press ad dis- torted his role and anti- Semitic remarks he made. Carter claimed his anti- Semitic statements were di- rected at one reporter and not at Jews as a group. New Books from Pantheon An analysis of the news media and the fictional ac- count of a labor strike in Bisbee, Ariz., in 1917 are the subjects of two new books published by Panth- eon. "Deciding What's News," by Herbert J. Gans is a com- parative study of the "CBS Evening News," and "NBC Nightly News," and Time and Newsweek Magazines. "Bisbee '17," a novel by Robert Houston, is the story of the struggle between the IWW, the toughest union in the history of the West and Harry Wheeler, last of the "two-gun" sheriffs.• Presweetened and Unsweetened A rainbow of 7 delirious flavors At everyday lowprices r I I =NI 111•11 ■ I III= =IN MIR - OHM UMW MI= BM= MN WWI MOM MEI NM IMB I E2EZJ I OFF 1 0 Off Hawaiian Punch ® Drink Mix .
