CLAM EATERS were recently able to order their cherrystones and contrib- ute to research for a clam- related cure for cancer at the same time in Chuck Muer restaurants. Guests at nine of his eateries in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida, were asked to pay five cents more for each clam, and Chuck would match it .. . sending the 10 cents per clam along to Dr. Arline Schmeer, director of marine studies at the American Medical Center at Denver, Colo. In a previous Clams for Cancer fund raiser in 1976, six Chuck Muer restaurants raised $1,081 for Sister Ar- line. A Dominican nun, Sis- ter Arline's 17-year study has shown that a sub-. stance called mercenene, found in Littleneck, cher- rystone and quahog clams, kills human cancer cells in tissue cul- ture. Although the substance has been effective in mice and tissue cultures, it has not yet been synthesized for use on human beings. Newspaper stories have told of some cancer patients, in desperation, eating up to a dozen raw clams a day, as a diet supplement . . . In some cases, their physicians have written to Sister Ar- line subsequently to say there has been substantial improvement. She emphasizes, how- ever, that eating clams is not recommended as a sub- stitute for recognized medi- cal treatment of cancer. The play will conclude the sec- (Continued on Page 33) Israeli Prices Are Skyrocketing JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israelis were alarmed but not surprised when the Cen- tral Bureau of Statistics announced that the price index soared by 8.7 percent last month. The highest monthly increase in 27 years without a drastic de- valuation of the pound. With April's figures in, inflation during the first four months of this year amounted to 23.4 percent and is currently running at an annual rate of 88 per- cent, one of the highest if not the highest in the world.
