JERUSALEM — Last
July, the Mayor of
Jerusalem wrote to 100 col-
leagues inviting their cities'
school children to partici-
pate in "Children of the
World Illustrate the Old
Testament." Cities around
the world were randomly
selected to take part in this
international children's
painting competition de-
signed "to strengthen our

psychologist, carefully
began going over every
one of the 12,000 entries.
The judges were amazed
at the high level of execu-
tion, the imagination and
the amount of individual
thought put into the
entries.
After intense "negotia-
tions" among the panel, five
top paintings were chosen
-on the basis of originality,
expression, color and
movement: Angela Bos-
kens, age 10, Dusseldorf,
Germany — "The Plague of
the Locusts"; Jayne
Feerick, age nine, Birming-
ham, England — "The Sell-
ing of Joseph"; Angelika
Fritz, age eight, Vienna,
Austria — "Daniel in the
Lions' Den"; Carolina Sanz
Sanchez, age 13, Madrid,
Spain — "Elijah Ascends to

the Heavens"; and Ran
Segev, age nine, Jerusalem,
Israel — "The Pillar of
Fire."
The four winners from
abroad and their escorts
were flown to Jerusalem
courtesy of El Al Airlines to
coincide with the Jerusalem
International Book Fair. On
April 22, all five winners
were honored at an awards
ceremony and presented
with official medallions by
Mrs. Navon at the
President's House.

The Jerusalem Munici-
pality treated the winners,
their escorts, and their host
families to a week of sight-
seeing in Jerusalem and Is-
rael. The Jerusalem win-
ner was also presented with
a complete painting set at a
special reception in the
Mayor's office.

The response was over-

countries plus 20 Israeli
cities quickly agreed to
submit entries. By De-
cember, thousands of paint-
ings were pouring into
Jerusalem, completely fil-

TEL AVIV — Every
_ morning soldier Chaim Ma-
rani approaches his
grandmother on a military
base and gives her a kiss.
The grandmother, 65-
year-old Fanny Sarur, is
one of hundreds of elderly
women who have important
jobs in the Northern Com-
mand.
Chaim serves at the base
in which his grandmother is
active as a volunteer.
Fanny!, the grandmother,
was born in Egypt, and now
lives in Tiberias. She
scrutinizes the uniform of
her grandchild daily and, if
necessary, cleans it and
polishes his boots.
About 300 women visit
eight Zahal -bases daily.
Their organization is called
"The Army of Volunteer
Women."
"Aunties, what have
you brought us?" the

soldiers ask, when the
women arrive at their
base. The women also do
heavy physical work to
prepare the bases for
emergencies.

The women's organiza-
tion has been headed by
Maya Korn for five years.
"We are active in Zahal
units that are short of man-
power," Maya Korn told us.
"After the Litani operation
in southern Lebanon, we
succeeded in preparing sev-
eral army bases. Our work
was praised by the army
commanders. We can easily
double the number of volun-
teer women. We have pro-
ved that in all units in
which we were active vigi-
lance has been
strengthened. The North-
ern Command has pub-
lished a commendation for
our work."

Dora Miterani, 63, of Kfar
Hitim, said "The reservists
find packed military bags
with their clothing and per-
sonal effects when they
come to the base. We care
for it, and make sure the re-
servist has everything he
needs. My son, who is a

soldier, is proud of my work
and values its importance."
The volunteer women
sort small arms parts and
clean uniforms. They as-
semble glasses for night
vision and clean rifles and
clothing.
