of the Michigan chapter of
the American Red Cross,
expressed the belief that the
resolution should have been
brought before the general
convention and added that
he believed that it could
have passed. However, the
resolutions committee did

The supervising rabbis
at Spencer Foods, Rabbi
Mordechai Savitsky and
Rabbi Jacob Savitsky,
rejected this demand on
Halakhic grounds, dec-
laring that stunning the
animal immediately after
shehita causes the blood
to clot and thus renders it
unfit for kashrut. The
USDA official in Iowa
thereupon issued an
order halting all kosher
operations at the
slaughterhouse.
The supervising rabbis
and the president of Spencer
Foods contacted the organ-
ization's executive
president, Rabbi Moshe
Sherer. Senator Jacob K.
Javits (R-N.Y.) prevailed
upon _Secretary of Agricul-
-1 ture Bob Bergland to with-
draw the ban and rescind
the "stunning" require-
ment. Some sprinkling ar-
rangements will be added to
the plant's operation in
order to respond to the
hygienic demands of the
local USDA official.
