"Las Vegas businessman Sid Hudson probably holds the all-time record for long-running hotel guests — he just recently moved out of his suite at the Flamingo after a 32-year stay. " 'But I'm seriously con- sidering moving back there,' he quipped. 'Because there's no one to check up on you when you're living alone in an apartment. Everyone at the hotel al- ways made sure I was all right.' "Hudson checked into the hotel in 1947 at the request of Bugsy Siegel. 'I told Mr. Siegel that I was going to make my home in Vegas and he said, Why don't you move into the Flamingo? I explained to him that I couldn't afford it, to which he replied: I'm not going to charge you anything. " 'Well, I wanted to pay, so he gave me a price, $150 per month. That in- cluded maid and tele- phone service as well as power. It was his idea.' "Throughout his 32-year tenure at the luxury resort, a period that spanned 15 different owners, Hudson's rent stayed at that same $150 figure. "Originally he lived in a suite near Siegel's 'penth- ouse,' which was located on the second floor of the Ore- gon Building, once the hotel's main wing. " 'I always had to use the stairs in those days," Hud- son chuckled, 'because Mr. Siegel would have the elevator to the second floor constantly tied up.' "The personable Hud- son, 1978 City of Hope Man of the Year, who has been recognized re- peatedly for his many contributions to worthy causes, knew Siegel quite well. 'If anybody needed a helping hand, Ben Siegel was there to help; and I guess some of that rubbed off on me,' Hud- son said. "During his record- shattering stay, Sid Hudson had the chance to meet many people who fre- quented the hotel. One of them was Howard Hughes. " 'Hughes used to walk around the pool at the Flamingo around 4:30 or 5 in the morning. We'd talk about different people we knew in Beverly Hills. " 'I remember that we used to fly to Los Angeles on Western Airlines when their planes would only hold 15 people and there were only about five planes at McCarran,' Hudson added. "Hudson has a letter from the Flamingo Hilton that warmly praises him. I noted that he's welcome to return anytime, and he may do just that. " 'They're beautiful people there,' he says." Ribicoff Will Retire WASHINGTON (JTA) — Sen. Abraham A. Ribicoff (D-Conn.) has announced that he intends to retire from the Senate when his term expires at the end of next year and declared that he wishes to return to pri- vate life at his home in Hartford, Conn. Ribicoff, who is 69, made his announcement prior to his original intentions, he said, because friends were talking of organizing a campaign for his fourth term in the Senate. Ribicoff, a Iiberal, has been a leader in the Democratic Party for more than 40 years on the state and national levels. Ribicoff is a member of Temple Beth Israel in Hartford and of the Wash- ington Hebrew Congrega- tion. A strong supporter of Is- rael, he nevertheless was a firm backer of President Carter's Middle East policies, especially the package sale of advanced jet fighter planes to Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia which angered many friends of Israel. 1402 S.
