his community with his
music. He was more often a
fiddler, and there could be a
role for a flutist.
The klezmer has been re-
vived, brought back to the
nostalgic who crave for the
sounds of familiar tunes.
It has just been brought
back to life as Jewish
Soul Music in a recording
of klezmer tunes entitled,
"The Art of the Klezmer,"
played by the award-
winning musician, the
eminent clarinetist Giora
Feidman.
Issachar Miron, widely
known for his creative mus-
ical talents composed the
numerous selections for this
recording.
Thelma Moore, who pro-
duced the musical ar-
rangements, recorded by
Variety Recordings, makes
interesting comments on
this production and on the
klezmer theme. Her
analyses follow:
"The sensitivity and mul-
ticolored nuances of Giora
Feidman's virtuosity reveal
a new dimension to clarinet
playing.
"Although he is a mas-
ter of the `klezmer' style
— music that has been
called a mirror of the
Jewish soul — his art has
a strongly universal ap-
peal, for it enters the in-

"A klezmer was a musi-
cian at Jewish weddings,
who, although unschooled,
quite frequently reached
heights of extraordinary
virtuosity. In this spirit,
Maestro Feidman, a princi-
pal of the Israel Philhar-
monic Orchestra, who has
been acclaimed by foremost
musicologists as a leading
clarinet player of our day,
brings a new dignity and
dimension of the folkish
klezmer image, reviving an
ancient art and elevating it
to new professional
plateaus with passion, joy

New Yeshiva U.
Program Slated
to Start in June

NEW YORK — Los
Angeles will be the center of
a new Yeshiva University
graduate program that
allows students and profes-
sionals to earn a master's
degree in social work. Those
entered in the program will
do field work in local Jewish
community agencies and
academic course work dur-
ing the summer at the Uni-
veristy's Wurzweiler School
of Social Work.
This approach is known
as the Block Education Pro-
gram. According to Dean
Lloyd Setleis, it is designed
so students from the met-
.ropolitan area, or anywhere
in the western or mid-
western states, can work in
an agency in or near their
home city from September
through May while achiev-
ing a graduate degree.
The first eight-week aca-
demic summer session will
begin at Yeshiva Univer-
sity's western campus in
late June.
