Anti-Semitism Remains a Problem in U.S.

By BORIS SMOLAR

NEW YORK — The latest
analysis of anti-Semitism in
this country will be a major
subject of discussion at the
five-day American Jewish
Committee annual meeting
which starts Wednesday..
The discussion will be based
on the interpretation of
findings by Prof. William
Schneider of Harvard of
various national opinion
polls reflecting attitudes
toward Jews and Israel.
Prof. Schneider's study
shows a steady decline in

anti-Semitism since the end
of World War II. It also
shows that the higher the
level of education among
the white population the
less anti-Semitism. How-
ever, the reverse is the case
among blacks. What can be
done about the dramatic
rise of negative feelings
toward Jews among black
leaders and black youth —
including the better edu-
cated — is the question
which the AJCommittee
conclave will deal with.
Another problem emerg-
ing from the study has to do
with church-related
Catholics and --Protestants
and their stand toward
Jews. Prof. Schneider has

established that theologi-
cally conservative white
Christians tend to be more
anti-Semitic than others. At
the same time, they are
slightly more pro-Israel and
more "pro-arms aid" for Is-
rael than liberal Protes-
tants and Catholics.

Among Catholics,
those who are very reli-
gious appear to be less
anti-Semitic; the reverse
is true among white Pro-
testants.

With regard to the anti-
Jewish feelings among
blacks, polls for 10 years
indicate that young blacks
are considerably more
anti-Semitic than older
blacks.
Moreover, black leaders,
who are significantly better
educated than other blacks,
expressed far more negative
feelings and agreed with
more negative stereotypes
about Jews than did blacks
generally. This, in spite of
the fact that black leaders
showed a greater awareness
than the general population
on the strong Jewish com-
mitment to_civil rights.
The prevailing opinion

among Jews is that opposi-
tion to Israel among non-
Jews and anti-Semitism are
related. This seems to be
borne out also in Dr.
Schneider's findings. They
indicate that as anti-
Semitism decreases, sym-
pathy for Israel increases.
