HARRY SATCHWELL,

co-author with Mary Con-
way, of "Meet, Eat & Enjoy
Greater Detroit," writes
. . . "I was particularly
pleased to read a recent col-
umn of yours and the dis-
cussion of Delmonico's Res-
taurant in New York. It
brought back some fine
memories of my late father-
in-law, Robert Steele, who,
under the name of 'Lately
Thomas' wrote the history
of that restaurant in his
book, `Delmonico's — A
Century of Splendor' in
1967 (Houghton Mifflin
Co.).
"Bob was an extraordi-
nary man! Well over six feet
tall, lean, heavy-boned and
a Robert Donat look alike,
he had a ribald sense of
humor, was a raconteur
without equal, a first class
chef and unsurpassed in his
knowledge of fine wines.
"His writing career ex-
tended from the post World
War I era (with other former
Doughboys such as Alex
Wolcott on the Paris Herald
and Tribune), through the
heady days of New York
journalism in the 20s (he is
immortalized from that
time by both his headline,
on a story regarding a bit of
mayhem inflicted by a long
suffering wife upon her er-
rant husband — 'SHE
CONKS TO STUPOR' and
by being one of the 'wit-
nesses' photographed by the
old New York Graphic in a
notorious faked photograph
of one of the era's best pub-
licized executions to a long
career as an editor for the
Los Angeles Times.
"Following his retirment
he launched a new and very
successful second career in
San Francisco as an author
of numerous histories and
biographies (a few, for
example, include the defini-
tive works on Aimee Semple
McPherson, Sen. Joseph
McCarthy of Wisconsin, the
first President Johnson,
Sam Ward — the first major
lobbyist, brother of the
author of the 'Battle Hymn
of the Republic' and the pro-
totype for our 'Uncle Sam').
"My favorite of Bob's
books is the one on De-
lmonico's, of course — be-
cause of the subject matter,
but also due to the following
dedication to my children,
nephews and nieces: :And
now, Grandchildren. Be
good, Be better, Be best,
And never neglect your
stomachs'.'
"The Delmonico book,
small parts of which were
reproduced in the second
edition of 'Meet, Eat &
Enjoy Detroit,' is to me, a
fascinating history of a cen-
tury in which its customers
ran from Daniel Webster
through the days of Jenny
Lind, P.T. Barnum and
General Sherman to Jimmy
Walker and included all the
great personages who vis-
ited New York during that
period.
"It was the place where
Lillian Russell regularly
out ate and drank Diamond
Jim Brady, where the Astor

'

`boys' padded the check in
order to get cash that their
penny-pinching multi-
multi-millionaire elders
would not let them have,
and where Charles Dickens
virtually began and ended
his 25-year-old love/hate
relationship with America.
"I recommend Bob's book
to you and your readers —
and — for your further
enjoyment I have enclosed
copies of the original 1838
menu mentioned in your ar-
ticle, similar ones from the
Astor House (1838 and
1849), the 1863 menu for
Delmonico's banquet for the
officers of the Russian fleet,
