THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS British Jews Swinging to Political Right BY MAURICE SAMUELSON LONDON (JTA) — Who- ever wins this month's British general election, the result-is likely to show that the 450,000-member Jewish community is be- coming steadily more con- servative in its political out- look as it progresses up the social scale and feels threatened as much from the extreme left as from the far right. At the same time, it will again show that in Britain there is no such thing as a distinct Jewish vote, capa- ble of influencing the result. Although the community cares deeply about Israel, there is no major difference between the main parties on the Middle East and voters know that Britain's influ- ence there is marginal any- My Mother always taught me to . . . dress warmly, eat the right foods, pick good company, work hard, be fair with my customers, always give them extra value for their money .. . Even if that were not the case, it would not make very much difference, since there is not a single constituency containing so many Jews that it can be regarded as a "Jewish" seat. Neverthe- less, the community's rightward swing is undeni- able. Until 1970, there were two Jewish Conservative members of Parliament. There are now nine, all of whom are seeking re- election. Their numbers are likely to increase further with a Conserva- tive victory. On the other hand, it looks as though the consid- erable Jewish influence in the Labor Party has passed its peak. Of the 31 Jewish Laborites in the last Parli- ament, only 23 are seeking re-election, including nine of the Labor government's 10 Jewish members. If Conservative Party leader Margaret Thatcher becomes Prime Minister, she will have at least two senior Jewish Cabinet ministers — Sir Keith Joseph and Sally Op- penheim. Even in the. Labor Party, Jewish MPs have displayed their "conserva- tive" inclinations by tend- ing to be to the center or right of the party. Most Jewish members, Conservative as well as Labor, emerged as defen- dants of the status quo in the recent heated debates about giving a measure of independence to Wales and Scotland. Leading oppo- nents of the devolution plan included Laborites Leo Abse and Eric Moonman, who is the chairman of the Zionist Federation, and Conservative lawyer Leon Brittan. • Although none of them stressed that they were influenced by their Jewish background, it was hardly surprising that they felt unable to re- late to local nationalisms which might one day 'threaten the unity of the United Kingdom. This is not to say that all Jewish politicians were against giving Wales and Scot: land greater autonomy. But the Jewish commu- nity has traditionally identified its own secu- rity with the stability of the realm and most Jewish politicians in- stinctively expressed this in the debate on devolu- tion. Since it has achieved un- precedented prosperity and contentment, therefore, Anglo-Jewry will increas- ingly cling to the social status quo, fearing that further radical changes MEXICO CITY (JTA) — An unofficial announce- ment that Mexico will in- crease its exports of oil to Israel by 50 percent — from 30,000 barrels a day to 45,000 — has touched off a furious anti-Israel cam- paign by pro-Palestinian, Communist and other lef- tist elements here, includ- ing political factions that will participate in the par- liamentary elections in July. So far, President Jose Lopez Portillo and the Foreign Ministry have ig- nored the outburst but it is very much in evidence in the news media. Roberto Esperon, secretary general of the Partido Socialista de Los Trabajadores (Socialist Workers Party) published an article in the Daily Ex- celsior accusing .Israel of re-exporting Mexican oil to Scuth Africa and of selling arms to dictatorial regimes in Latin America. The leftist daily El Dia published a statement of solidarity with the Palesti- nian people and accused Is- rael, Egypt and the United States of "conspiring against the peace in the Middle East." The state- ment condemned the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty and "Israeli aggres- sion" against the rights of the Palestinian people. It confirmed that the Pales- tine Liberation Organiza- tion is the sole legitimate representative of the Pales- tinians. The statement was signed by the leftist Mexi- can Peace Movement, the Community Party, the Par- tido Popular Socialista and the Socialist Working Party. The one possible brake on the community's rightward shift might have been fear of the extremist National Front which plans to run more than 280 candidates. However, the Front is con- demned as strongly by the Conservatives as by Labor and the smaller Liberal Party. For its part, the Board of Deputies of British Jews has ,played an important part in the fight against the National Front, particu- larly in producing leaflets exposing its Nazi char- acteristics. The Board has, however, been careful not to ally itself with, the country's main anti-racist organiza- tion, the left-wing Anti- Nazi Front, which it says is anti-Zionist and anti- democratic.
