Tanenbaum has spent much of his career working with Christian organiza- tions. "I have undergone some transformations be- cause of that work," he said. One of those transforma- tions was his impression of the new Pape. Tanenbaum was skeptical of the Pope's attitude towards Jews and the Jewish religion. Tanenbaum dis- covered his apprehen- sions were needless, however, when the Pope read the text of his re- marks to the 24 Jewish leaders gathered in Vati- - can City recently. The Pope outlined five basic issues between Chris- tians and the Jewish people of the world, according to Tanenbaum. The five themes were: • The religious relation- ship between Christianity and Judaism; • Translation of the Vat- ican guidelines of 1975 to concrete facts; • Recognition that al- though the Church must preach the New Testament, it accepts the idea of reli- gious liberty; ▪ Anti-Semitism; • The issue of Jerusalem and Israel;- Tanenbaum spoke in de- tail on three of the five themes. On the issue of Jewish- Christian relationships, Tanenbaum cited Christian policies of the past. "Many Christians feel that the Holocaust was punishment for the murder of Jesus," he said. That belief is also, stressed by the contem- porary "Jews for Jesus" movement. "They try to persuade our young people that Judaism is incomplete," Tanenbaum said. Attacking the issue of anti-Semitism, Tanenbaum spoke of his recent meeting in Bonn, Germany, to dis- cuss the presentation of the Oberammergau Passion Play. According to Tanenbaum, the Pope intended to make the Vatican guidelines of 1975 the policy of his Pa- pacy'. "It is hard for Catholics to understand that one does not stop being a Jew when he stops practic- ing," he said. "Catholics must not seek to convert those who have stopped practicing." In relation to the chang- - ing attitudes of the Catholic -Church towards, Judaism Tanenbaum remarked, "What has taken 1,900 years to be established is Dr. H. Saul Sugar, ophthalmologist, will be the honoree at a two-day sym- posium on glaucoma surgery May 17 and 1Lat the Detroit Plaza Hotel, sponsored by the Wayne State University School of Medicine's department of ophthalmology and the Kresge Eye Institute. , Dr. Sugar has taught ophthalmology residents at the WSU school of medicine for 25 years. "I am persuaded in every city whiCh- I travel that it is the better part of wisdom for us to recognize that history is not intended to be a hitch- ing post to the past, but a guiding post for the future."
