Council of Orthodox Rabbis
Plans May Jubilee Dinner

The Council of Orthodox
Rabbis will celebrate its
50th anniversary with a
golden jubilee banquet 6,
p.m. May 14 at the main
Jewish Community Center.
A half century ago a
group of rabbis united to
formalize supervision of
communal activity under
Torah law. Their purpose
was to strengthen Sabbath
observance, bring order into
the conditions of kashrut,
shore up the laws of family
purity, provide counsel and
advice on religious matters
and provide opportunities
for continued study through
lectures and the Daf Yomi
(daily Talmud study).

A Bet Din was estab-
lished for all problems relat-
ing to personal and family
matters (divorce, adoption,
conversion) and to provide
the option of settling dif-
ferences that needed media-
tion and could be solved in
the spirit of Torah.
The last remaining
member of the original
founding group Ray Yit-
zhok Stollman, now resides
in Israel after serving the
Detroit community for more
than 40 years, including the
positions of president and
head of the Bet Din.
At the helm of the Vaad

Harabonim today are
Rabbi Leizer Levin,
piesident and Av Bet Din,
and Rabbi Chaskel
Grubner, executive di-
rector iri charge of day-
to-day operations.
Salek Lessman is general
chairman of this year's
event. For reservations, call
the Coun'cil of Orthodox
Rabbis, 559-5005.
