OFFICE: 752.6333 Louis E. Levitan, former executive director of Israel Bonds in Detroit and the current executive vice president of the American . Technion Society, died April 14 at age 68. Born in Russia, Mr. Levi- tan was raised in Chicago and was graduated from the University of Chicago. During World War II, Mr. Levitan served with the U.S. Army in Germany. He CONGREGATION B'NAI MOSHE PROUDLY PRESENTS served there as chief of the Bureau of Documents, Trac- ing and Child Search for UNRWA and later in Italy as director of welfare for the International Relief Organ- ization. In the former posi- tion, he was responsible for rescuing hundreds of Jewish children who were lost during the war. With IRO he was head of all the Jewish displaced persons camps in the central section of the U.S. Zone in Ger- many. Mr. Levitan also was regional director for the Joint Distribution Corn- mittee in Milan, Italy, in post-war Europe. in Einstein Lodge of Bnai Brith, Shaarit Haplaytah, Jewish National Fund, the Zionist Organization of America — Detroit District and in efforts on behalf of Bar-Ilan University. Returning to the U.S. after his service overseas, Mr. Levitan plunged into the new campaign for build- ing the security of Israel. He was field representa- tive and regional director of the United Jewish Appeal's speakers bureau for the Western U.S. and was asso- ciate director of the Los Angeles Israel Bond office and director of the Win- nipeg, Minneapolis, San Francisco and Detroit Bond offices. He started in the Is- rael Bond program at its in- ception in January 1951 and was director of the De- troit Bond office from 1958 to 1974 until he was prom- oted as supervisor on the West Coast. He retired from the Is- rael Bonds position in 1976 to accept the post with the American Technion Society. He re- sided in New York City at the time of his death.
