THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS `Moses' Carter Attends Adviser's Seder By TRUDE FELDMAN WASHINGTON —'If this Passover is different from all others because of the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty, the man who helped make it possible also added to the spirit of the holiday by his presence at a tradi- tions Seder. Jimmy Carter — in an unmarked limousine — rode with his wife from the ite House to the home of an , and Stuart E. zenstat, his 36-year-old assistant for domestic af- fairs and policy. They ar- rived at the start of the first Seder and remained until the end — three hours later. "There was a .lovebi-- ex- pression on the President's face when he listened to my two sons recite the Four Questions," Eizenstat told me. "It was the first time for Synagogue Ruin Jails 2 in Paris PARIS (JTA) — Two men were arrested Wednesday in Strasbourg and charged with ransacking two local synagogues last weekend. The two men were arrested by the police as they were leaving the court after . being charged with ran- sacking local Catholic churches. Police say the two men, whose names were not re- leased, had specialized in robbing the alms boxes in local churches. They repor- tedly told investigators they ransacked the synagogues when they failed to find an alms box and started look- ing for it. The police say the attacks were carried out for pure criminal purposes with no anti-Semitic or political motivations. The two have long criminal records and police investigators said they believe they might have carried out similar at- tacks elsewhere in France. * * * French Probe Desecration of 3 Synagogues PARIS (JTA) — Three synagogues, two in Alsatia and one in south France, were ransacked last weekend. Windows were broken, books. and Torah scrolls thrown • on the ground and swastikas painted on the walls. t Antibes, in the south of ce, vandals also broke esks, chairs and orna- ments. In all three cases the police believe that right- wing fringe elements are responsible for the profana- tions. The Strasbourg commu- nity is organizing a mass demonstration Saturday to ask for increased police pro- tection, and in Lyons a meeting was held to protest against the forthcoming congress in that city of the extreme right-wing New Europe movement. Police officials said that all meas- ures will be taken to try and ensure the safety of Jewish property in the country. the boys. And, as I tried to -- coach them, the President tapped my knee to indicate I should give them the chance to do it one their own." Eight-year-old Jay's "job" was to open the front door for Elijah. But Jay startled everyone when he first ran around to the back door to ask the President's Secret Service agents for per- mission to open the front door. President Carter was "to- tally absorbed" in the "Seder" proceedings, focus- ing his complete attention on every aspect. "He was not, in any way, distracted by outside events," Eizenstat said, adding, "And none of us felt uncom- fortable with the President of the United States at the Seder table. He put us at ease, and we felt right at home — where we were! I've known President and Mrs. Carter for 10 years and I've been with them in many places," he said. "Because ,Passover is a family holi- day, Fran and I wanted , Israel to Host 1980 Eurovision JERUSALEM (JTA) — The Broadcasting Authority has decided to hold the 1980 Eurovision song contest in Israel for the second consecutive year. In a 5-1 vote, the Authority's board of directors decided that by holding the songfest again in Israel the positive image accorded Israel abroad would outweigh any expenses or problems incur- red in organizing the_e-vent a second time. Israel _received the right to host the contest due to placing first in the competi- tion this year, with Gali Atari and the "Milk and Honey" group's rendition of "Hallelujah." The board asked the gov- ernment to finance next year's event, so as not to push the Authority into bankruptcy. While the pro- posal to hold the contest again in Israel was made by Authority chairman Re- uven Yaron and Director General Yoseph Lapid, TV director Arnon Zuckerman opposed the plan, noting that the Eurovision contest "disrupted TV's regular work and its ability to fulfill its running obligations." Jews, Egyptians Celebrate Treaty MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (JTA) — The Jewish and Egyptian communities of Minneapolis and St. Paul joined together in a cere- mony of thanksgiving to honor the peace treaty be- tween Egypt and Israel. More than 1,500 people gathered at the College of St. Thomas to listen to the Aaron Kula Orchestra play Israeli music and to the Middle Eastern Ensemble playing the music of Egypt as well as their special ar- rangement of "Hava Nagila." them to feel like they were a part of our family for one evening. "But, more importantly, reading the Haggada would never be the same for us as it had been before the peace treaty (between Egypt and Israel) was signed." The Eizenstats also wanted the President to participate in the first Seder after the treaty, to "re-emphasize the his- toric nature of what he had helped to accomplish and what that achieve- ment signified after 3,000 years of history." "What struck me most about the President's par- ticipation was his tremen- dous_ interest in every facet of the holiday," Eizenstat said. "He was truly able to contribute from his own knowledge to the history of the festival." As an example, the President mentioned a pas- sage in Isaiah in which Isaiah had prophesied that Israel and Egypt would make a peace pact, which would eventually be the bridge for peace between Is- rael and all of her neighbors.
