El Al Cancels Friday Charters After Pressure from Orthodox

TEL AVIV (JTA) —El Al,
Israel's national airline, has
been forced to cancel a $10
million charter flight deal
with an American tour
operator because of protests
by Orthodox groups in Is-
rael and the U.S. that the
scheduled Friday night de-

partures violated the Sab-
bath.
Transport Minister Haim
Landau, who refused to
ratify the agreement, said
he was not surrendering to
pressure from religious cir-
cles but simply taking cog-
nizance of- economic

realities.
About half of El Al's
passengers from the U.S.
East Coast are Orthodox
Jews who prefer the Israeli
carrier because it serves
only kosher meals. Harold
Jacobs, chairman of the
Union of Orthodox Jewish

Congregations of America,
issued a statement in New
York in which he declared:
"Your (El Al) total disre-
gard. of Halkha and world
Orthodox opinions is a-dis-
grace and ifyou will proceed
with thiS action, the Ameri-
can Jewish community will

do what is necessary to pre-
vent the desecration of the
Sabbath by an Israeli
organization."
The El Al management
here expressed surprise at
Landau's ruling. They ex-
plained that the charter
agreement with Travel

Tours was aimed at its
non-Jewish market which
El Al has been striving to
expand. El Al in fact has al-
ways operated on Saturdays
and Jewish holidays — ex-
cept Yom Kippur — for the
benefit of Christian pil-
grims and others.

ClippereClass.
a full-fare idea that works.

When Pan Am introduced
Clipper® Class on most of its 7475
a few months ago, we thought it
would be a success.
But it's gone far beyond that.
While some other airlines
have quietly dropped their ver-
sions of this special class, ours
has become one of the most popu-
lar services ever created for the
business traveler and others who
were paying the full Economy
Fare.
And for a very good reason.
Pan Am has a long history of
flying long distances, with a tra-
dition of providing passengers
with the greatest possible comfort
and convenience. Now, with Clip-
per® Class, this expertise has
truly come into its own.
-
First, you'll be seated in a
special section of the plane, with
an empty seat beside you when-
ever possible. You'll be served
complimentary beverages. You'll
.get free headsets for watching the
movie and listening to music.
And at theairport you'll receive
special check-in attention. You'll
also have use of the First Class
Lounge, where available.
Clipper® Class has now been
expanded to all Pan Am /tans-
Atlantic, Mans-Pacific, and our
daily Round-the-World flights.
For reservations, see your
ltavel Agent or transportation
department. Then choose
Pan Am's Clipper® Class.
