Dimona: Different Type of Town

By GLORIA L. CHARNES

(Copyright 1979, JTA, Inc.)

DIMONA, Israel — This
is the town that defied de-
mographers. This is the
town that made it.
The name signifies
make-believe, for no one ac-
tually thought it would ever
become a town. Founded 23
years ago, largely through
David Ben-Gurion's inspi

ration and a large measure
of hutzpa, it lies 20 miles
southeast of Beersheba,
with scattered clusters of
Bedouin tents and a moshav
adorning the desolate
dunams in between.
First arrivals, 36 Jews
from Morocco, took one
dazed look at the unkind
terrain and wanted to
leave.
Despite distinct forebod-
ings concerning its survival
when it came into existence,
Dimona is regarded favora-
bly by experts in urban
planning. In its first seven
years, the population ex-
panded from zero to 13,000.
Steadily, there has been a
progressive increase, until
now the inhabitants
number roughly 30,000.
Dimona's olim are a di-
vergent, colorful mix. There
are Jews from central Euro-
pean countries, from North
Africa, South America, In-
dia, remote republics in the
Soviet Union, and Black
Hebrews from Chicago.
Of Dimona's residents, a-
minority are of European
background. The non-
Europeans, mainly Orien-
tal or Sephardic Jews, re-
present a wide spectrum
from varied civilizations
and continents.
Dimona's Black Jews
maintain they have his-
torical connections since
they are descended from
the Ethiopan family of
King Solomon and the

Queen of Sheba, hence
constituting prior claim
to the Holy Land. From
the rabbinic point of
view, they are not bona
fide Jews, and their reli-
gious roots are suspect.
The rough, barren set-
tlement town has come a
long way. There are wide,
paved streets, a spacious
town square, nurseries,
child care center, 28
synagogues, public parks,
and a climate superior to
Tel Aviv because of the ab-
sence of humidity. Two
large cotton plants each
employ almost 1,500 work-
ers. A Dead Sea phosphate
plant is nearby.
Its reputation has spread.
Frequently, olim, when
interviewed by Jewish
Agency authorities, ask to
be sent to Dimona. Attrac-
tive incentives encourage
newcomers. Rentals are
heavily subsidized and tui-
tion for secondary education
is waived. There are exemp-
tions from customs on goods
with the exception of a pur-
chase tax levied on auto-
mobiles.
Despite the apparent ease
of integration — absorption
is not effortless. Con-
veniences taken for granted
in modern settings are con-
spicuously absent, or were.
Hannah, a vivacious
teacher, recalls: "We were
for three months without a
stove or refrigerator. But
there are advantages. There
is no stove or refrigerator to
repair. And when they fi-
nally arrive, you appreciate
them much more."
Absorption has never
been easy says city man-
ager Gershon Winer. A
former rabbi in Grand
Rapids, Michigan, Winer
typifies the international
ambience here. Born in
Poland, schooled in To-
ronto, he taught at Long
Island University. "We
have immigrants from all
over the world," he con-
firms. "They don't have
the Western tradition for
cleanliness. Standards
are difficult to maintain.
Garbage accumulates.
People are careless about
sanitation."
Everywhere you turn,
there is sand — desert
dunes, desert wasteland.
But there is also peace and
serenity here, and a wild
form of beauty, a grandeur
rising from the unrelieved
dunams of- desolation. The
heat is intense in summer,
but it is a dry heat that cools
off by evening. "We don't
have air conditioning. We
can't afford it and we don't
need it," the natives jest.
For visitors remaining
overnight, there is even a
hotel, the Hotel Gil, with
about 40 rooms. It's far re-
moved from the Hilton or
Holiday Inn, but for their
prices, they don't promise
deluxe accommodations.

History's Ironies

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — The
editors of Maariv recently
pointed out some ironies of
history:
The late Prime Minis ',.er
Levi Eshkol was one of the
most dovish of Israel's
politicians, yet Israel ex-
panded greatly under his
leadership because of the
Six-Day War.
Menahem Begin, who
once dreamed of a Jewish
state "on both sides of the
Jordan" is now returning
territory to Egypt.
Begin will also realize the
dream of his bitter political
opponent, David Ben-
Gurion, with the develop-
ment of the Negev.
