JERUSALEM — A book
by Hebrew University
orientalist Prof. Gabriel
Baer on the social history of
Egypt from the 18th to the

published by the New Lib-

The 460-page book,
"Studies in the Social His-
tory of Modern Egypt," was
translated' into Arabic by
Dr. Abd Al Khaleq Lashin,
lecturer in social history at
Ein Shams University. It
was originally published in'
English by the University of
Chicago Press in 1969.
Another book by Prof..
Baer, "A History of Land
Ownership in Modern
Egypt 1800-1950," is about
to be published in Cairo as
part of a series of books

translated into Arabic.
The bibliography of the
book on the social history
of Egypt identifies three
other works by Prof.
Baer, including his work
on Egyptian guilds in
modern times, published •
by the Israel Oriental
Society in Jerusalem.
Prof. Baer's researches on
Egyptian land ownership
and guild history are exten-

scholars — and his research
in another field of interest
to Arabs has just been pub-
